Library Manager, Head of Adult Services, Shrewsbury Public Library (Shrewsbury)
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Library Director, the Head of Adult Services serves as a key member of the library management team responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the services and activities of the Adult Services Department. Responsible for coordinating and managing the adult collection, programs and activities; all other related work, as required. The Head of Adult Services performs professional library functions of a responsible nature, involving substantial judgment and initiative in designing programs, developing the collection for adults, and supervising activities for adults. Performs complex tasks requiring independent knowledge and its application to non-routine situations. The Head of Adult Services supervises a team of two full-time professional Reference Librarians.

Leadership & Strategic Planning
● Responsible for the daily operation of the adult department to ensure the highest quality of service, as established by library policy, including supervision of staff and library volunteers.
● Assists the Library Director in the development of strategic goals and objectives; budgeting and grant planning; serves as part of the library management team and on other various internal committees.
● Ensures proper supervision of general public safety.
● Provides reference and reader’s advisory services for adults; responds to inquiries on procedures, in person and by telephone; provides direction, information and instruction.
Supervision of Staff & Volunteers
● Trains, supervises and evaluates staff and volunteers assigned to the Adult Services Division; makes job assignments and verifies that assignments are carried out properly; participates in the recruitment of new employees.
● Provides training and assistance to patrons and staff in the use of library technology, including hardware, software and online databases.
● Supports the annual performance appraisal process, providing feedback, input and guidance to Adult Services staff.
Program & Community Engagement
● Plans, organizes, promotes, and facilitates programs and activities for adults including ongoing programs such as English Conversation Circle, Memory Café, Genealogy Club, summer reading, and others.
● Plans, coordinates, and organizes informational, recreational, and cultural events
● Plans and develops related public relations materials; coordinates services and programs with outside agencies.
● Serves as the contact person for performers and other event leaders. Handles contracts, payment, performer’s needs, promotion, room setup, and day of event issues. Introduces and oversees programs in progress as needed.
● Manages marketing for the Adult Services Department.
Collection Development & Budget Management
● Develops and maintains all aspects of the adult nonfiction collection, including books, reference materials, audio-visual, multimedia, Library of Things, and online materials.
● Maintains departmental budget for materials, programming and grant projects.
● Procures and administers grants.
Website & Communication Management
● Contributes to maintaining and updating the adult services section of the library’s website, ensuring content is accurate, engaging, and current.
● Assists in addressing and resolving sensitive inquiries and complaints from both internal and external sources, ensuring timely and professional resolutions.
Professional Development & Industry Awareness
● Has up-to-date knowledge of contemporary issues, trends and technology in the library services to adults by attending workshops, professional meetings and reading current literature.
● Represents the Library at regional, state and community events and meetings.
Additional Responsibilities
● Performs other related duties as required to support the department's operations and organizational goals.
Qualifications
Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program; three years of professional library experience in a public library, with two (2) to four (4) years of supervisory experience. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Experience serving diverse populations, demonstrating an understanding of various cultural, socio-economic, and accessibility needs to provide inclusive services. Capable of working independently with minimal supervision, while maintaining accountability and a focus on meeting organizational goals. Familiarity with library management systems, digital tools, and emerging technologies that enhance service delivery and operational efficiency. Skilled in planning, organizing, and overseeing projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery, resource management, and alignment with library goals. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex ideas and concepts to diverse audiences, including staff, patrons, and community stakeholders. Ability to research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods, procedures, and techniques, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with library goals and community needs. Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with library patrons, addressing inquiries, and resolving conflicts with professionalism and diplomacy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, peers, and the public, promoting collaboration and teamwork across departments. Strong ability to adapt to changing priorities, new technologies, and evolving library trends to ensure the continued success of library operations. Ability to assist in the creation and refinement of policies, ensuring they reflect best practices and meet the evolving needs of the library and community. Strong ability to analyze problems, assess options, and implement practical solutions that support the library's mission and objectives.
