Youth Services Library Clerk, Ayer Library (Ayer)

The Youth Services Library Clerk helps with the daily functions of the Youth Services division of the Ayer Library by assisting families and other patrons, preparing and circulating materials, and supporting the work of fellow staff members.

SUPERVISION
Reports directly to the Head of Youth Services. Tasks may also be assigned by other members of staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Greet and engage visitors as they enter the library
• Provide information to the general public
• Register new patrons and issue library cards
• Help patrons find and use library resources
• Answer routine telephone or in-person reference inquiries, referring patrons to librarians for further assistance, when necessary
• Loan library materials to patrons and collect returned materials
• Sort and shelve materials
• Inspect materials or equipment to determine need for repair or replacement
• Organize files and complete other routine clerical tasks
• Explain library policy, resolve minor complaints, and maintain good relations with library users
• Perform other duties as needed and assigned

HOURS
10-19 hours per week

• The ability to work effectively with youth, families, and library colleagues from a variety of backgrounds amid frequent interruptions in a changing workplace
• Excellent communication skills
• Creative problem-solving and the ability to learn and apply good judgment
• Good humor, patience, perseverance, and the desire to contribute to a thriving public service-oriented team
• A desire to learn new skills, refresh old ones, and to “pitch in” where there’s a need
• Comfort troubleshooting problems with library technology

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties; some duties require moderate effort such as lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb, stoop, reach with hands and arms and lift, move, and push equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and use a computer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• A high school diploma or equivalent
• Previous customer service experience
