Description:
The Library Assistant is responsible for staffing the service points of the Morse Institute Library and providing excellent customer service to the community of Natick. The employee also assists other library staff in the creation of promotional materials and book displays, and performs other specific tasks as assigned by the department supervisor and/or Library Administration.

Supervision Required: The employee works under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibility: The employee may be responsible for the supervision of library volunteers.
Essential Functions:

· Provides excellent customer service to the community of Natick, and the patrons of the Morse Institute Library.
· Utilizes the Integrated Library System (ILS) to charge, discharge, and renew library materials at the service desks or curbside. Utilizes appropriate library software to manage patron reservations and fulfill patron requests.
· Registers new patrons for library cards and manages patron records within the ILS
· Answers telephone calls and replies to emails from library patrons.
· Shelves library materials as needed, and assists patrons in locating and retrieving library materials. Sorts and organizes the delivery of library materials to and from Minuteman libraries.
· Accesses and utilizes reports from the ILS to provide customer service to library patrons and the community of Natick.
· Repairs books and other library materials as needed.
· Performs other tasks as assigned, consistent with the functions of the work unit and level of responsibility. Supports overall library operations and services through projects and other duties as appropriate and assigned.
Qualifications
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: The Library Assistant must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent, and have at least one year of customer service with demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population. Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skill
Knowledge:
· Knowledge of and experience with library materials.
· Previous library experience, bilingual abilities, and knowledge of Sierra ILS software is preferred, but not required.
Abilities:
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other library personnel.
· Ability to work well in a team environment.
Skills:
· Skill in working with a diverse population of staff and patrons.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Skills:
· Ability to lift up to 30 pound and push book trucks weighing in excess of 100 pounds.
Motor Skills:
· Motor skills needed for moving objects, operating a computer, copying and scanning documents.
Visual Skills:
· Ability to read documents for general understanding and for analytical purposes on a daily basis. Ability to read a computer or mobile device daily.
