Library Professional Associate - Reference Librarian, Shrewsbury Public Library (Shrewsbury)
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general direction of the Library Manager, Adult Services, plans, develops, organizes, directs, and evaluates promotion of a full range of reference services for all library users, including those who visit in-person or use the library remotely. Provides in-person and electronic reference services to the public including, but not limited to: connecting patrons with library materials and/or information, conducting research, helping patrons navigate online resources and databases, assisting with computer/technology queries, creating and implementing innovative library programs, constructing informational and promotional materials, and acquisitions.

● Performs a wide variety of services at the public reference desk including: assisting patrons with reference and information requests, conducting research, helping patrons with public access catalogs, printers, computers, and online resources; trains users on use of e-readers, tablets and other devices, and makes information referrals. Handles issues as they arise.
● Provides one-on-one and group training for library patrons and staff. Maintains current knowledge of technology developments and library information sources and electronic services.
● Acts as part of a team responsible for planning, organizing and implementing programs for adults to encourage language and information literacy, lifelong learning and programs that promote reading, viewing and listening, as well as the use of library materials and facilities. Assists with and plans various adult education programs, job search programs and multicultural events. Oversees staff and volunteers involved in programs.
● Contributes to library promotional activities. Creates informational and publicity materials in print and electronic format; including calendars, webpages, social media platform postings, displays, posters, etc. Compiles and organizes statistics. Performs circulation desk duties when necessary; oversees staff and is responsible for building security on a rotating basis.
● Works with a team to evaluate and purchase online and print materials; collaborates on maintenance of collection through purchasing, shelf reading, weeding and discarding.
● Attends informational and instructional meetings and workshops related to library operations; may participate in regional committees and task forces.
● Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience ALA accredited Masters of Library and Information Sciences Degree; two years of professional experience in library reference services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of professional library methods, reference resources and practices; knowledge of books, authors and reader’s interests; skill in the operation of computer systems and online systems and databases; skill in applying library research methods and practices.
Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons; ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with superiors, subordinates, peers and the general public. Experience with technology-based library services, including downloading online content, managing public computers and printing services, etc.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Dependability, adherence to scheduled hours. Commitment to excellence in customer service; strong oral and written communication skills; organizational skills. Two years of work experience in a busy library system is preferred. Experience with automated library systems preferred, specifically Evergreen ILS (C/W MARS).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises library on assigned weekends and evenings. Supervises volunteers and contract workers.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is performed primarily in the reference and circulation area, where the noise level is loud; the workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations which require advance planning; regular library schedule requires evening and weekend work. The employee operates standard library equipment and complex information systems. Duties require constant interaction with library patrons to provide information and assistance, in person, by telephone or online. The employee has access to confidential patron records. Errors could result in patron dissatisfaction, delay or disruption of services or financial loss. Moderate physical effort is required to perform most duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate equipment. Able to move and lift materials up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and use a computer. Often required to push or pull book trucks weighing up to 50 pounds. May be required to stand for extended periods of time.
