Programming and Marketing Librarian, Cumberland Public Library (Cumberland, RI)

Nature of the Work:

An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating programs for the entertainment of and enjoyment of adults. This employee is also responsible for developing the library’s brand kit, supervising the library’s social media accounts, and assisting all programmers with press releases as needed. Work requires the application of considerable knowledge of library practices, procedures, and techniques and the exercise of considerable independent judgment in their execution.  This employee works regularly scheduled shifts at the Reference Desk and will be cross-trained to assist at the Circulation and Children’s Desks as needed. 

Essential Functions:

Creates and coordinates library communication materials to ensure a consistent library identity and branding.  Works with other library departments to create promotional materials as needed or to offer guidance.

Develops and designs print and electronic marketing communication products such as library promotional literature, brochures, flyers, press releases, email marketing, social media and web page content as needed and in collaboration with other employees.

Identifies new ways of reaching the community.

Oversees, maintains and develops content for the library’s social media outlets.

Plans, organizes and conducts adult programs, both in-person and virtual, on a variety of topics both for general and specific interests.

Collaborates with library staff, presenters, other Town Departments and representatives of community-based groups to plan, schedule and coordinate programs which meet the needs of the community.

Identifies and manages partnership opportunities with local organizations to assist in marketing and/or delivering library programs and services.

Collaborates with other staff as needed on interdepartmental projects, marketing campaigns, and special events.

Compiles statistics for evaluation of programs, and prepares reports.

Staffs the Reference Desk on regular shifts while also enjoying off-desk time to complete tasks.

Identifies and interprets the information needs of patrons. Assists patrons with information requests.

Assists patrons in the use of library equipment such as computers, scanners, and printers. Also assists patrons in the use of their own devices such as phones, computers, and tablets.

Performs Reader’s Advisory services.

Attends workshops, webinars and conferences sponsored by local and regional library organizations to keep abreast of developments and trends in the delivery of library services, as well as classes and other Town offered trainings to maintain current knowledge of required equipment and procedures.

Is cross-trained to offer service at Circulation and Children’s Desks.

Performs other duties related to the primary scope of the position as required.

Supervision:

Supervision Received:  Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Library Director and Assistant Director/Technology Coordinator.  

Supervision Given:  Coordinates efforts of staff contributing to adult programming and marketing. Manages the library’s social media channels and other marketing/promotional outlets. Supervises creation of style guides, branding, and marketing templates for the library.

Job Environment:

Work is performed under typical office and library conditions.

Operates computers and peripherals, telephone and other standard office and library equipment.

Makes constant contact with the general public and other library staff, requiring a high level of courtesy and patience. Contacts are in person, in writing, and by telephone and involve an information exchange dialogue.

Has access to department-level confidential information, which requires the application of appropriate judgment, discretion and professional office protocols.

Employee will be scheduled 35-hours weekly. Monday and Tuesday, 9:00am-5:00pm; Wednesday and Thursday, 12:30pm-8:00pm; and every other Friday/Saturday, 9:00am-5:00pm. Position requires working 2 Saturdays every summer 9am-1pm. Employee is also required to work approximately 1 Sunday a-month at the Reference Desk, paid at time and a half.

Compensation:  $59,901 – $62,596 depending on experience

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

Masters of Library Science degree and some library experience.

Experience planning and implementing programming for patrons/customers.

Experience executing marketing campaigns and producing press releases or other marketing material.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Thorough working knowledge of library principles and procedures, particularly the knowledge of reference services and sources. Knowledge of the organization and management of library operations.  Must have knowledge of and experience with an automated library network, publishing programs, spreadsheet and other office programs, and website publication.  Thorough working knowledge of all major reference tools, print, non-print and online. Knowledge of library organization systems.

Knowledge of marketing principles, video development, and content creation platforms is a must. Applicant should have a good understanding of what an “eye-catching” flyer or social media post looks like. Additionally, applicant should have a thorough knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

Ability:  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.  Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers. Ability to work efficiently, with a high level of detail and to prioritize multiple tasks.  Ability to use and instruct the public in the use of databases and library technology.  Ability and willingness to learn job-related skills.

Skill:  Strong public relations and public speaking skills. Excellent computer skills and flexibility to adapt to constantly changing technology.  Excellent customer service skills. Advanced research skills.  Creativity and imagination to effectively publicize and promote programs.  Skills necessary to provide Reader’s Advisory.  Skill in all of the above listed tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (25 – 60 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
