Youth Services & Maker Space Librarian, Swampscott Public Library (Swampscott)
The Youth Services Librarian / Maker Space Coordinator performs professional library services for children,
teens, and their caregivers while overseeing the operation, development, and promotion of the Library's Maker
Space. Under the direction of the Library Director and the day-to-day supervision of the Head of Children's
Services and the Head of Reference/Teen Librarian, this position is responsible for youth collection
development, innovative programming, outreach, technology instruction, and maker-centered learning
opportunities.The Librarian develops and delivers educational, recreational, literacy-based, and STEAM programs for
children and teens, maintains Maker Space equipment and resources, develops partnerships with schools and
community organizations, and promotes lifelong learning through creative technologies. The position may
supervise pages and volunteers, participate in consortium initiatives and professional development
opportunities, and provide assistance in Reference and Circulation Services as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Youth Services
• Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate engaging educational, recreational, literacy, cultural, and
STEAM programming for children, teens, and families.
• Conduct story times, workshops, book discussions, summer reading activities, special events, and other
age-appropriate programs.
• Provide reader's advisory and reference services to children, teens, parents, caregivers, educators, and
other library patrons.
• Select, evaluate, and maintain children's and young adult collections in print, digital, audiovisual, and
other formats.
• Monitor trends in youth literature and educational resources to ensure collections remain relevant and
responsive to community needs.
Maker Space Responsibilities
• Coordinate the daily operation of the Library's Maker Space.
• Develop and facilitate maker-centered programming using STEAM concepts and creative technologies.
• Train patrons in the safe and effective use of Maker Space equipment, software, and technology.
• Maintain Maker Space equipment, supplies, inventories, and workspaces.
• Recommend new equipment, software, and programming opportunities to enhance Maker Space
services.
Outreach and Community Engagement
• Develop and maintain partnerships with local schools, childcare providers, community organizations,
and municipal departments.
• Represent the Library at outreach events and community activities.
• Promote youth services and Maker Space programming through displays, flyers, newsletters, social
media, the Library website, and other promotional materials.
Public Service
• Assist patrons at public service desks as assigned.
• Provide circulation, reference, technology, and customer service support.
• Assist patrons with computers, printers, digital resources, electronic devices, and online services.
• Participate in consortium initiatives, committee work, and professional development opportunities.
Supervision
• Provide guidance, training, and oversight to pages, volunteers, interns, and other assigned staff.
• May serve as acting department head or supervisor when designated.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the overall direction of the Library Director. Daily supervision is provided by the Head of
Children's Services and the Head of Reference/Teen Librarian.
May supervise pages, volunteers, interns, and other assigned staff. May serve as acting department head or
supervisor when designated.

Work is performed primarily in a municipal public library with frequent interruptions and regular interaction
with the public. The position requires movement throughout a multi-level library and participation in programs
held both inside and outside the facility. Evening and weekend work are required. The library environment may
become busy and noisy during programs and peak service hours.
OCCUPATIONAL RISK
The duties of this position present minimal risk of injury when appropriate safety procedures are followed.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Demands
• Move throughout a multi-level library.
• Lift, carry, push, or move library materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and up to
50 pounds occasionally, with assistance when appropriate.
• Bend, reach, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods.
• Operate computers, audiovisual equipment, Maker Space equipment, and other standard office and
library equipment.
Motor Skills
• Ability to move throughout three floors of the library.
• Ability to perform repetitive keyboarding, filing, shelving, and material handling tasks.
Visual Demands
• Ability to read printed materials, computer screens, and library records.
• Ability to distinguish details necessary for cataloging, organizing, and operating Maker Space
equipment.

Qualifications
Required
• Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.

Preferred
• Experience working with children, teens, or youth programming in a public library, school, or
educational setting.
• Experience with Maker Spaces, STEAM programming, digital literacy instruction, or creative
technologies.
• Experience with the Evergreen Integrated Library System.

Salary Notes
19 hours per week. Saturday through Friday and includes rotating Saturdays (September through May) and one evening shift.
