Part-Time Library Assistant, Forbush Memorial Library (Westminster)

The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting with circulation and desk services, technical and clerical work, as well as public service work supporting the operations of the Library. The Library Assistant is required to perform all similar or related duties. This position is currently expected to work 12.5 hours a week, with one additional Saturday (9am-2pm) per month.

Anticipated schedule:

Tuesdays 930am-2pm

Wednesday 3pm-8pm

Thursday 3pm-6pm

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Responsible for opening and closing the library building, including properly starting and shutting down the library’s computers, setting the security system, and ensuring that the physical appearance of the building is maintained during hours of operation.

• Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of library records of patrons of all ages as required by Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 78, Section 7.

• Assists patrons at the library circulation desk; answers the telephone; provides basic reference and reader’s advisory services; issues library cards; collects and records fines; assists patrons with the copy machine, and shelves materials.

• Issues patron passes to area museums and attractions and monitors inventory of passes.

• Assists patrons in using the PACs (Public Access Computers), which may include assistance with and instruction on the C/W MARS system and other library resources.

• Processes C/W MARS and Commonwealth Catalog interlibrary loans.

• Maintains patron records.

• In cooperation with the Director, may initiate, write, edit and/or send publicity or press releases, produce social media posts, and advertise library programs.

• Occasionally and under the direction of the Director or the Youth Services Librarian, may assist in planning programs for Library patrons.

• May be assigned to special projects, such as preparing bulletin boards and creating book displays.

• Utilizes and is familiar with basic reference materials, and assists the public with their use.

• Processes new materials for circulation and repairs library materials.

• Oversees materials on the reserve shelf in a timely and efficient manner.

• May be assigned to cross-train to work in other areas of the Library.

• Attends workshops, meetings, and conferences to keep current with issues and skills related to position.

• Performs other related job duties as required.

Qualifications

Ability to work with children, parents, the general public, and library staff in a supportive, courteous, and tactful manner. Ability to perform multiple tasks in an organized, accurate and timely manner. Practice information literacy abilities in library operation work and practice and model those abilities while assisting patrons. Artistic ability required to plan and to execute decorative bulletin boards and crafts for children. Ability to offer continuing education or enrichment opportunities to patrons. Ability to plan and execute programs for children or adults. Ability to follow directions and complete projects with minimum supervision. Ability to troubleshoot library and office technology issues.

SKILLS
Strong communication skills, critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and customer-service skills. Digital literacy and proficient skill in the operation of a personal computer and office equipment, and the application of office software including word processing, spreadsheet, and database management applications; proficient mathematical skills, record keeping, and keyboarding skills.

EDUCATION
Some college coursework required and a bachelor’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE
1 to 3 years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience.
