Job Details

Youth Services & Library Assistant, Whelden Memorial Library (West Barnstable) (Barnstable)

This is a 15–19-hour-per-week position. The regular schedule is Monday and Wednesday, 2:00–7:00 PM, and Thursday, 9:00 AM–2:00 PM, with approximately one weekend program per month. Some flexibility and availability for programs and special events outside of the regular schedule is expected. There are also opportunities to pick up additional hours by substituting for other staff as needed.

Primary responsibilities include selecting and maintaining materials for the children’s and young adult collections; creating thoughtful and inclusive displays; evaluating usage to ensure the collection remains current and responsive to community needs; and planning and delivering programs for education and entertainment, such as storytimes, crafts, workshops, and reading clubs. The position also involves building connections with families, schools, and local organizations and promoting youth programs and services.

As part of a small library staff, this position shares responsibility for day-to-day public service and general library operations. Staff work collaboratively at the public service desk, assisting patrons of all ages with circulation, technology, and general library needs. Other duties may include processing materials, occasional basic cataloging, and supporting library-wide programs, fundraisers, and events.

The ideal candidate will bring creativity, initiative, and a genuine interest in youth services. This role requires a high level of independence along with strong collaboration skills. The candidate should be comfortable managing their own time and priorities with limited supervision, taking initiative, working closely with a small staff, working with the public (including public speaking), and adapting to new tools and technologies. A desire and ability to craft or lead creative group projects will serve a candidate well.

The Youth Services & Library Assistant also creates promotional materials for programs and services using Canva. Candidates should be able to create materials that are eye-catching while prioritizing accessibility, readability, and clear communication.

We are happy to train the right candidate on library-specific systems and technical procedures. A willingness to learn, take initiative, work collaboratively, and contribute to all aspects of a small library environment is more important than arriving with extensive library experience.

The essential functions or duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar or related.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience working with children or teens strongly preferred.
Familiarity with Google Workspace, Canva, and social media is desirable.
Previous library experience is a plus but not required; previous experience within the CLAMS Library Network is especially welcome.
Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small staff.
Willingness to learn, take initiative, and adapt to changing needs.
