Young Adult Librarian, Lilly Library (Northampton)

DEFINITION

This position is responsible for administration and operations of the Young Adult/Teen library department. This includes managing programming, collections, and services for its patrons.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides customer service by assisting patrons with library resources, equipment, and services, and by resolving issues and enforcing library policies.

Manages the young adult collection by selecting, purchasing, and repairing items, and by discarding materials based on data and relevance. The librarian is responsible for staying current on content and trends. Shelf reading as needed.

Plans and implements programs and services for young adults ages 12-18. This includes assessing community needs, marketing programs, and collaborating with community groups and outside agencies. 

Instructs young adults on how to use physical and digital library tools and resources and helps them with information gathering and research skills. 

Catalogs new materials and oversees their processing and receipt. 

Participates in developing goals, policies and procedures related to Young Adult/Teen Services.

Serves as a member of the library management team.

Maintains library web page and social media accounts

Performs other related job duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The employee plans and prioritizes the work independently in accordance with standard practices and previous training and is expected to solve most problems of detail or unusual situations by adapting methods or interpreting instructions accordingly. Instructions for new assignments or special projects usually consist of statements of desired objectives, deadlines, and priorities. Technical and policy problems or changes in procedures are discussed with the supervisor.


JUDGMENT AND COMPLEXITY

The work requires examining, analyzing, and evaluating facts and circumstances surrounding individual problems, situations, or transactions and determining actions to be taken within the limits of standard or accepted practices.

NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Contacts are with co-workers, vendors, the public, and representatives of civic or professional organizations. The employee represents the organization in matters of departmental practices, procedures, regulations, or guidelines, and is called upon to tactfully discuss controversial matters and ease interactions with dissatisfied customers. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any equivalent combination of the below-listed education, training, certification, and experience, is qualifying:

Bachelor’s degree in library science or a related field.

1 to 3 years' experience as a professional librarian; experience working with teens and young adults. 

Supervisory experience preferred. 

Master’s in Library Science preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including young adult’s literature and cataloging systems; basic library reference sources and research techniques; collection development and maintenance; proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and general mathematics.

Ability to work independently and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; manage multiple tasks simultaneously with accuracy and research information for a variety of library users; create goals and provide leadership for subordinates.

Excellent technology and customer service skills. Skilled in working collaboratively with people.


PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical and environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

Works primarily indoors in a library setting.

Sits or stands, with intermittent periods of stooping and walking. May be required to move objects such as files, boxes of books or library materials, office supplies, and office equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.

Applies motor skills to move objects, file, and sort documents, and use office equipment such as telephones, and computers.

Routinely reads documents for general understanding and analytical purposes, including handwriting, spreadsheets, library materials and forms; inspects surroundings and fine details to assess conditions of materials and equipment; and reviews detailed information displayed on a computer screen.

Fluent in both spoken and written English.

Ability to maintain a quiet and professional composure.
