Library Space: A Planning Resource for Librarians created a formal set of best practices for designing library space that may be applied to libraries across the nation. Developed through a partnership between MBLC staff and the design firm Sasaki, the guide empowered librarians, administrators, space planners, and architects with tools for the planning and design of public library buildings. It took the user through the step by step process of determining what to consider when designing a new library for their community, and included illustrations of different room types, adjacencies, shelving, and seating that can be considered for a building project.
A new Library Space is coming soon!
Due to the new ADA web accessibility rules, we’ve had to take Library Space offline. But don’t worry! The MBLC Construction Team began preparing a fully revised and updated, accessible web version in 2025. The new Library Space will feature a wealth of additional information, new examples, and the most up-to-date best practices in public library space planning. We hope to republish Library Space in summer 2026.
If you would like a printed copy of the old Library Space while you wait, please reach out to Andrea Bono-Bunker or Heather Backman. Or check out other books on library space design and construction available from the MBLC through interlibrary loan.
