Circulation Desk Shift Supervisor, BiblioTemps (Westfield State University) (Westfield)

BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Title:                Circulation Desk Shift Supervisor
 
Location:         Ely Library, Westfield State University (Westfield, MA)
 
Position Type: Temporary
Start date:       January 13, 2025
End date:         May 9, 2025
 
Schedule:        15 hours per week; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM
 
Pay Rate:        $17.50 per hour
CORI:               Required
 
General Statement of Duties:
Supervision of operations at the circulation desk of an academic library, including: opening the library; directing the work of student workers; managing the service desk; charging and renewing items for patrons; circulating materials; collecting and reporting statistics; reporting safety, security, or emergency situations to the University Police; monitoring use of library spaces and group study rooms; and following Ely Library and University policies and procedures. Other duties may be assigned by the Library Assistant III or Head of Access Services.
 
Supervision received: Reports to the Library Director.
 
Supervision exercised: Directs the work of student employees who officially report to a Library Assistant III.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 
•  High school diploma or equivalent
•  The ability to work diligently and independently without direct supervision
•  Ability and willingness to foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that is respectful of diversity
•  Work in a team environment
•  Responsibly and supportively supervise university student employees
•  Ability to interact productively with patrons and adapt to serve their needs in a calm, respectful, and courteous manner
•  Exercise judgment and leadership if/when responding to emergency situations
•  Sit or stand for extended periods of time
•  Lift up to 40 lbs., and push/pull library carts full of books
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
•  Preferred applicants for these positions will have any combination of the following: 
•  Bachelor’s degree
•  Experience in the public service area of a library
•  Experience using automated library systems
•  Knowledge of LC call number system
•  Experience supervising student and/or part-time employees
•  Experience in a busy office environment or customer service setting
