Youth Services Librarian, Whitinsville Social Library (Northbridge)

The Town of Northbridge is seeking candidates for a full-time (35 hours a week) Youth Services Librarian at Whitinsville Social Library.

Primary responsibilities:

·        Develop, promote, and moderate in-person programming and events for ages infants through high school. 

·        Collection development, maintenance and cataloging of children’s and young adult books, DVDs, kits and other materials.

·        Provide direct customer service and Readers Advisory to patrons with a focus on patrons under the age of 18 and their caregivers.

·        Maintain and adhere to all aspects of the youth services budget, spending, and deadlines.

·        Outreach to local preschools, public schools, businesses, and community organizations to promote the library through community engagement.

·        Demonstrate to patrons how to use self-service options including using their online library accounts and library apps, registering for events and museum passes, and downloading e-books and e-audiobooks.

·        Coordinator and supervisor for high school volunteers.

·        Remains current in resources, services, and technologies in the youth services and information fields.

Flexible schedule year round is required; may include an occasional Saturday or evening shift.

The work is detailed and fast-paced, especially in the summer. Must be able to prioritize tasks and work independently. Must be able to work with people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds from the community. Job involves sitting, standing, walking, and using stairs.

Starting salary is $53,904 and includes benefits, COLA, and step increases upon yearly review. Benefits include healthcare, retirement, paid holidays, and sick and vacation time.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

·        Bachelor’s degree.

·        1 or more years of strong customer service experience.

·        1 or more years of experience working with babies, children and/or young adults.

·        Knowledge of children and young adult literature.

·        Outgoing, creative, and energetic.

·        Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.

·        Experience with apps, downloadable media, and e-reader devices.

·        Experience with computers, Internet/browsers (especially Chrome) and printers.

·        Ability to use alpha-numeric organizational schemes like the Dewey Decimal System.

·        Experience with arts & crafts, marketing, and social media management.

·        Personal transportation to professional development workshops, outreach events, and other required travel.

·        Public library patron with experience using an OPAC.

·        Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, stand for up to 5 hours, repeatedly bend and stoop to reach shelves, and work under very noisy conditions for up to 1 hour. 

Preferred Qualifications 

·        Master’s degree from an accredited library school or completion of coursework towards a Master's degree from an accredited library school.

·        1 or more years of professional library experience.

·        Previous experience using Evergreen ILS including cataloging and circulation functions.

·        Created and hosted programs for children (like Storytime).

·        Grant writing experience.

·        Experience with teen advisory boards.

·        Experience with book ordering on Ingram.

·        Experience with Beanstack.

·        Reads for enjoyment.
