Duties & Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Manager for Research Services, this position serves as one of the department's experts on foreign, comparative, and international law. Works as a team member providing reference and research services in law and law-related disciplines, via print and electronic formats, to faculty and students of Harvard Law School, and to a broader research community. Serves as a liaison to specific faculty members, coordinating their library and research services. Responsible for interpreting and implementing policies and procedures with regard to the level of research service provided to various patrons, deciding how best to approach and carry out a research project and the like.


Serve as one of the department's expert in sources for and topics relating to foreign, comparative, and international law.
Provide advice and recommendations regarding selection and cancellation decisions, particularly those affecting the library's foreign, comparative and international law collection. Responsible for selection for one or more jurisdictions as needed.
Work closely with the school's graduate programs, including support and collaboration with the LL.M. writing workshops ,orientation support and support for the S.J.D students.
Provide coordinated research services to Harvard law faculty members, including preparation of bibliographies, facilitation of current awareness services, fact-checking, identifying relevant books and articles, preparing faculty research portals, etc. with a focus on foreign comparative and international law, but also including US law.
Teach legal research concepts and skills to law students with a focus on foreign comparative and international law, but also including US law.
Manage research inquiries by phone, email and in-person.
Participate in the development of instructional materials in legal research, including print and/or web-based tutorials, course sites and research guides.
Serve as liaison to selected HLS journals, providing training, resources and article-specific advice; coordinate research services for journal groups.
Serve as liaison to selected HLS programs of study, providing training, resources and coordinate research services.
Provide individual research consultations by appointment to faculty ,students and other patrons.


May contribute 20% time to other functional areas of the Library.
Participate in orientation and training for new reference department staff.
Actively continue ongoing professional development, including maintaining a high degree of expertise in many facets of research service including information technology, knowledge of legal and law-related information sources, sources for business and corporate information, and instructional methods.
Serve on local and University-wide committees, and participates in the intellectual life of the School.

Basic Qualifications
Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution required. ABA accredited JD or equivalent foreign degree required.
Additional Qualifications

Teaching experience in a classroom or formal training setting required.
Strong working knowledge of at least one major European (non-English) language required.
Strong information technology skills.
Familiarity with technology tools, for example, experience with web publishing tools, developing content for the web, research platforms, and knowledge management platforms and tools.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong customer service orientation.
Demonstrated ability to contribute as a member of a team and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in the implementation of library policies, practices, and priorities.
Reading knowledge of a second non-English language, or a commitment to learn additional language(s).
At least one Romance language and one non-Romance language preferred, with a particular preference for Spanish as one of the languages.
Demonstrated experience successfully managing complex projects and deadlines.
1-3 years legal reference experience preferred.
