On-Call Reference Librarian / Substitute Librarian pool, Springfield City Library (Springfield)

We’re renewing our call for applicants for our substitute pool at Springfield City Library. We will reopen to the public on July 6, 2021, so we need to have some more great on-call librarians jump in the pool! This is an outstanding opportunity to gain varied experience in a progressive organization with great co-workers. There are no guaranteed hours. You will be contacted when we have a need and you can accept or decline the shift as your availability allows. We may have slots in the Children’s Room, the Adult Services area of the Library, or a generalist area, where you would help any patron coming in or contacting any of our eight branches or our Central Library. There is no residency requirement for this position. Finally, this position is continuously posted, so there is no closing date.

Assignments may be for 4 to 8 hours a day, filling in for staff vacancies or vacation and sick leave. However, there are no guaranteed hours.


Bachelor's degree and completion of an American Library Association accredited Master of Library Science required.

Two or more years of experience in a library environment preferred. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Somali, or other community languages are desirable.

Applicants should consider their proximity to Springfield due to the on-call nature of the job.
