Adult Services/Reference Librarian, Mattapoisett Free Public Library (Mattapoisett)

The Town of Mattapoisett seeks a community-focused, energetic, and friendly professional for the position of full-time Adult Services/Reference Librarian at the busy Mattapoisett Free Public Library.  This 35 hour per week position includes one evening and Saturday hours.

Under the supervision of the Library Director, and in cooperation with other staff, the Adult Services/Reference Librarian manages all aspects of adult and young adult services including collection development, technology maintenance and training, reference and readers advisory for adults and teens, and programming as needed.

The position requires a high degree of initiative, independence, and the judgment to bring unusual situations and policy questions to the Library Director for resolution. This librarian may supervise other staff and volunteers who assist in the adult services department.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:

Responsible for all reference work including collection development and collection maintenance. Provides bibliographic instruction. Provides reference assistance and reader’s advisory services to the public and assists staff in developing these skills. Assists patrons and town staff in finding local information and materials in all formats. Assists the public with genealogy and local history requests.

Assists other staff with automated network upgrades and new products. Manages updates to staff computers including security software.

Assists with the management of PCs, tablets, laptops, and printers. Troubleshoots patron and staff computer and printer issues. Offers computer and device training for patrons and staff, both one-on-one and in groups.

Staffs the adult circulation desk in cooperation with other library staff. Renders assistance with circulation, explaining library procedures, policies and best practices. Empties book drop, opens and closes the library at times, performs all regular circulation functions when needed, including interlibrary loan functions.

Maintains the library’s subscriptions to museum passes and manages the circulation software for patrons to reserve and check out passes.

Oversees the Special Collections with the Library Director. May process donations in keeping with best archival practices.

Collaborates with local school librarians and the staff of community organizations.

Responsible for planning and promoting programs for adults and teens, including emerging technologies workshops.


Masters in Library Sciences from an American Library Association-accredited institution, or the equivalent combination of education, experience and training. Bachelor’s degree required and at least three years of experience and training in a public library setting that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must demonstrates knowledge of current trends in public library service, library networks, reader’s advisory services, and emerging technologies such as 3D printing.

The ability to communicate discreetly, effectively, and pleasantly is a high priority. Demonstrated excellent customer services skills required. Strong background in automated library networks, SIRSI Dynix preferred. Experience promoting library services and programs using a variety of means including social media needed. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to assume responsibility and work collaboratively. The library functions as a strong team to provide the best library services possible to users of all ages and abilities.

The successful applicant must complete a physical examination, CORI and a drug screening for the Town of Mattapoisett before the appointment is made.

$41,000 - $45,000 depending on education and demonstrated experience. Benefits are offered from the Town of Mattapoisett.
