Metadata Management Librarian, University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT)

The UConn Library is seeking two Metadata Management Librarians at the rank of University Librarian I, II, or III.  Each Metadata Management Librarian will have a unique opportunity to shape how we create, use, and manage metadata for the 21st century library. Along with all UConn Library personnel, the Metadata Management Librarian makes a positive contribution to a culture of inclusion and respect in all interactions within the Library and across the University. 

Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions & Discovery, the Metadata Management Librarian manages metadata necessary for the discovery, access, and stewardship of UConn Library collections. The librarian applies knowledge of relevant international and national standards, rules, and best practices for creation, analysis, enrichment, and maintenance of metadata at the individual record level and in batch. This position will also be responsible for coordinating the documentation of cataloging and metadata standards, policies, and workflows in conformance with current cataloging standards and practices.  The Metadata Management Librarian collaborates across the University to develop and enhance procedures for effective metadata management, and is responsible for developing operational solutions to metadata access and discovery problems.  Librarians hired at all ranks will be responsible for identifying opportunities for innovation within metadata management, librarians hired at a University Librarian III level will also be required to use an advanced professional knowledgebase and skillset to proactively identify and resolve critical needs and foster those skills in less experienced staff.

Appointment Terms

This is an open rank search to fill two, full time positions based in Storrs. Salary and rank are dependent upon education, qualifications, and experience. 



Minimum Qualifications for University Librarian 1, UCP 5 Level

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program (or international equivalent).
Demonstrated ability to manage metadata within a variety of inter-related systems and interfaces.
Knowledge of MARC21 and RDA, and familiarity with other current and emerging structured metadata standards, models, applications, and initiatives (examples include Dublin Core, MODS, METS, BIBFRAME, KBART, and Linked Open Data).
Knowledge of bibliographic utilities and library management systems.
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and initiative to learn new skills and/or acquire new knowledge related to position responsibilities.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Additional Qualifications for University Librarian 2, UCP 7 Level

Minimum of three years’ professional experience in an academic library or comparable setting.
Participation in professional development and scholarship activities at the local level or higher.
Additional Qualifications for University Librarian 3, UCP 9 Level

Minimum of six years’ professional experience in an academic library or comparable setting.
Evidence of sustained participation in library-related professional development activities at a regional level or higher.

For All Levels

Bachelors’ or second Master’s degree in fields relevant to position’s responsibilities (e.g., management of information systems, data analysis, computer science).
Experience with the Alma library management system.
Working knowledge of one or more high-level scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl, PHP, Javascript).
Working understanding of Semantic Web technologies (based on RDF).
Working knowledge of metadata tools and systems for creating, editing, and transforming metadata (e.g., XML, XSLT, Oxygen, MarcEdit, OpenRefine).
Experience working with APIs and with normalizing and scripting transformations of structured metadata in an XML environment (e.g., JSON).
Demonstrated success with project management.
