Director, Millville Free Public Library (Millville)

Job Description: Library Director, Part-time, Hourly Rate

The Library Director is responsible for the direction and operation of the library in accordance with policies established by the Board of Trustees and in accordance with the regulations of the Board of Library Commissioners. The Director makes policy recommendations to the Board and implements and interprets policies set by it. The Director keeps the Board advised of current development, needs and problems, and has final responsibility for all library services, activities and resources.

1. Directs and evaluates library services. Identifies and addresses library needs and problems.

2. Provides library services to the public including special programs and children’s     programs.

3. Promotes community use and support of the library and involves the library in community affairs.

4. Selects and weeds materials and develops the library collection.

5. Oversees library and maintenance personnel.

6. Supervises the maintenance of building, library equipment, furnishings and grounds.

7. Promotes and publicizes library services and activities, using various forms of

communication; initiates or directs production of quarterly newsletter.

8. Strengthens library resources and services with supplementary collections and support services available from the Central Mass Regional Library System.

9. Participates in regional library activities, including in-service training programs offered by the Central Mass Regional Library System.

10. Applies for grants (local, state, and federal), following through on requirements when awarded.

11. Prepares monthly reports for the Board. Participates in trustee meetings and acts as an advisor to the Board on library matters.

12. Presents budget recommendations to the Board: manages the approved budget; prepares vouches and authorizes expenditures; maintains financial records; defends the budget and represents the interest of the library at hearing and town meetings.

13. Other activities as required.



1. Bachelor’s degree. Training in basic library administrations, reference methods and services cataloging and book selection offered by Central Mass Regional Library System.

2. Proficiency with computers and Internet communication.

3. Ability to relate to general public and to work effectively with community groups.

4. Understanding and promotion of various library services.

5. High degree of motivation, initiative and resourcefulness.

6. Ability to speak and write effectively and clearly.

7. Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books and performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, bending, reaching, and climbing. The employee must regularly lift and/or mover material weighing up to 30 pounds.

8. Willing to submit to a CORI.
