Library Assistant, Emily Williston Memorial Library (Easthampton)

The Emily Williston Memorial Library located in Easthampton Massachusetts seeks a Library Assistant.

This position will work under the general direction of the Adult Services Librarian and the Library Director, and will perform circulation duties including processing reserves, interlibrary loan requests, and registering patrons for new library cards. The library Assistant also helps patrons with locating materials, basic computer and reference questions, and reading recommendations.  The Library Assistant will work unsupervised and be expected to solve problems and serve library users independently. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

*Uses library automated circulation system to circulate materials to library users including checking materials in and out, processing reserves/holds, registering borrowers, collecting fines and fees.
*Answers incoming telephone calls.
*Responds to public inquiries and provides basic directional reference information.
*Deals tactfully and courteously with public.
*Maintains confidentiality of library user records.
*Processes library materials following established procedures.
*Handles fine and fee collection.
*Shelves returned library materials.
*Helps library users with public computers and printing.
*Attends staff meetings.
*Performs other related duties as required.

The schedule for this position is:

Monday: 4-8pm
Tuesday: 4-8pm
Wednesday: 4-8pm
Saturday: 8:30am-1pm


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:  

Outstanding customer service skills and a welcoming attitude.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
Ability to make decisions in accordance with library policies and procedures.
Experience with common office machines along with general computer, internet and keyboarding skills.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work with limited supervision.
Familiarity with library circulation systems. 

Physical & Mental Requirements: 

Work is performed in a busy library setting, subject to moderate noise and sometimes frequent interruptions. 
Must be able to maintain focus.
Must be able to walk, stoop, reach, stand, talk and listen.
Must be able to retrieve library materials from stacks for patrons quickly and easily.
Must be able to walk up and down stairs.
Clerical and customer service experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of basic computer skills such as typing and use of a mouse or other input device.
Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities upon approval by the Library Director.
