Children's Librarian, Swampscott Public Library (Swampscott)

General Statement of Duties: Performs professional and supervisory tasks at the Children’s Room Desk. The work is performed under the general direction of the Library Director.  General supervision is exercised over all Library Assistants and Part-Time Aides in the Children’s room. The Children’s Librarian is expected to work 19 hours per week with alternating Saturdays and one evening shift. This is a Job Share position

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1.      Supervisory Duties- Oversee the operation of the Children’s room desk and the automated library system.

a.       Provide direct public service at the desk, including policy explanation, complaint resolution, problem solving, patron registration, fine collection and circulation of materials.

b.      Train all Children Room Assistants and Aides

c.       Maintain workflow at the desk

d.      Participate as a member of the library management team.

e.       Assist in writing Children room policies

f.        Assist in the hiring process of Library Assistants and Aides

g.      Keep abreast of trends and technology. Routinely evaluate procedures and recommend improvements and modifications.

h.      Prepare necessary reports and collect statistics as a guide for future planning

2.      Library Materials Management

a.       Develops and maintains all aspects of the Children’s collection, including books, periodicals, audio-visual and multi-media materials.

b.      Catalogues Swampscott materials in the Noble database.

c.       Manage the stacks; including weeding

3.      Other Duties

a.       Oversee the planning of programs and displays. This would include story times, summer reading and crafts programs as well as special events,

b.      Provide reference and reader’s advisory service for children and parents.

c.       Attend library meetings and participate in professional activities

d.      Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of children’s literature, past and present, knowledge of children’s developmental stages, knowledge of appropriate materials and programs for various age groups, knowledge of computer software. This person should be able to enjoy children and have the ability to multi task.  Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons, especially children.  Ability to work independently and handle problem patrons and emergencies effectively. Ability to meet and deal with people effectively; ability to discern reader interest level; ability to foster a friendly and supportive attitude toward patrons and ability to foster cooperation among staff

Knowledge of the Evergreen system a plus.

Physical Demands: The employee is frequently required to stand for a period of time. He or she must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Education and Experience:  MLS or M.Ed. preferred; Bachelor’s degree required with some previous library experience in an automated network required, 3-5 years of supervisory experience required.

This is a part time job share position- 19 hours with benefits.

This is a union position.  The Children Librarian will become a member of SEIU.
