Librarian I, Youth Services, Seekonk Public Library (Seekonk)

Duties/Description: Librarian Is provide professional services and other forms of assistance directly to children, young adults, and their caregivers. Duties include providing professional services in the areas of reference, collection development, programming, library instruction, technology support, and other tasks needed to provide core library services to their clientele. Librarian Is assess user’s needs and design appropriate programs and services to meet those needs. Librarian Is are expected to monitor expenditures, collect relevant data, evaluate program performance and deliver reports as required for programs and services within their assigned areas. Librarian Is may be required to occasionally perform other duties outside their assigned areas when necessary to maintain the effective operation of the library. Librarian Is reports directly to the Associate Director. Librarian Is receive guidance from, and coordinate their activities with the Librarian IIs working in their section.

Hours:   Thirty-five (35) hours per week.  Requires working two evening shifts (12:30 to 8:00 PM) and alternating Fridays and Saturdays (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM)


Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association, and at least six months of work experience in a public library providing direct service to the children.  Relevant experience may include time spent as a professionally supervised library school student, library intern or volunteer delivering library services to children. 

Skills and Abilities Required: Librarian Is must have a strong commitment to public service, an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to work independently without direct supervision. Librarian Is must have an ability exercise sound judgement to interpret and apply library policies and rules. Staff librarian must have a working knowledge of public library operations, automated library systems, and information technologies and services commonly used by their cliental. Librarian Is working in Youth Services must have a broad and demonstrable knowledge of the developmental needs of children, children’s literature and other media intended for children, and methods and techniques for developing children’s literacy.  Employment offers are contingent on passing a physical examination and criminal background check (CORI).

The starting rate is $25.22 per hour with increases to follow in three annual steps.
