Children/Young Adult Librarian & Assistant Library Director, Millbury Public Library (Millbury)

Purpose of Position:

Under general supervision of the Library Director, develops, administers, and coordinates services of the Children/Young Adult Department, performs managerial duties related to library operations, special programs, and activities. Works with school personnel and community groups to develop youth services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Library Program Management:

Selects and evaluates books, recordings, and other non-print materials for children and young adults; determines locations of materials; evaluates collection for balance and comprehensiveness.


Plan, develop, and implement story hours, reading programs, crafts, and all other children/young adult activities including summer reading programming and Teen/Tween) Advisory Groups.


Assists patrons in using online catalog and other electronic tools and resources; assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities.


Establishes and conducts comprehensive public relations programs to engender goodwill and promote the library and its services:

Employ appropriate means of communication, including but not limited to social media, electronic postings, press releases, newsletters, displays, etc.
Addresses community groups (such as local businesses, child-related groups, schools, students, seniors, parents, etc.) to inform them of library-related services.
Cooperates with teachers/school personnel in research assignments.
Conducts orientation visits of school children, young adults, and teachers.
Provides reference, reader's advisory and instruction and serves as resource to parents, schools, and community.

Keeps informed on trends in children/young adult literature and role of youth services; takes active role in professional groups; attends workshops and conferences.


Responsible for internal and external marketing including: posters, displays, exhibits, library graphics, book lists, and publicity releases. Supervises social media accounts, library website, and content. Works with Library Director on informational brochures and questionnaires.


Develops community awareness of library materials and services.

Personnel Management:

Trains and supervises library staff and volunteers 
Assists with weekly staff scheduling
Assists in the hiring of library staff
Evaluates staff and supervises operational procedures
Encourages and recruits volunteers.

Fiscal Management:

Prepares and submits recommended department budget to the Library Director.
Actively pursues supplemental sources of funding:
Prepare grant proposals to fund new or supplemental programs and/or services.
Administer grants according to specific guidelines.
Coordinate with Friends of the Library and other community service organizations to develop other fundraising activities.

The Children/Young Adult Librarian & Assistant Library Director serves as official municipal department head in the absence of the Director.

Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience in professional library work including familiarity with children/young adult literature and experience in a responsible supervisory capacity or equivalent. Graduation from college supplemented by completion of graduate study in library science (M.L.I.S.) in an accredited library school preferred but not required.



Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities: 

Sitting and standing for extended periods of time; lifting up to 30 lbs. of supplies, books, materials and computer equipment; reaching for books on shelves, sitting and kneeling on the floor, and climbing on stools.


Thorough knowledge of reader interest levels and broad knowledge of books, authors, and films related to children and young adults.


Operate the following equipment as required, including, but not limited to: computer equipment, typewriter, fax machine, electronic calculator, photocopier, e-readers, and other such devices.


Considerable knowledge of the resources, procedures and practices of library administration.


Working knowledge of methods of public administration and management in relation to the operation of the library.


Ability to organize and direct the work of professional, technical and clerical subordinates in a variety of library activities.


Ability to interpret library policies, objectives and facilities to community groups and the general public and to establish and maintain favorable public relations.


Ability to communicate concisely and effectively.


Working knowledge of automated library systems.
