Part-Time Reference Librarian, Regis College (Weston)


Under general supervision of the Information Services Director, responsible for providing reference services to the Regis student body, faculty, staff, administration, and visitors.

Job Functions

· Responsible for full library operations during assigned working hours, including working cooperatively with circulation staff, supervising student workers, and contacting maintenance or security as needed.

· Provides reference and research help, including database searching instruction. Provides assistance via phone, email, chat and in-person.

· Troubleshoots problems related to library equipment such as printers, scanners, workstations, and copiers.

· Oversees student workers and directs their work activities.

· Evaluates reference and circulating collection as needed, suggesting acquisitions as well as de-selecting based on established criteria.

· Maintains statistical records for all reference services provided.

· Provides circulation desk coverage as needed.

· Assist with reference projects as needed.

Other Duties

· Participates in professional library organizations to keep abreast of new developments in library reference services.

· Performs other related duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibility

· Supervises Library student employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Regis College’s policies and applicable laws.  May be responsible for opening or closing the Library alone. Responsibilities include training as needed.



· Master’s degree in Library Science or Library Information Science (MLS/MLIS) and one to three years of related experience.

· Knowledge of integrated library systems (ILS), computer programs, applications and online databases. Demonstrated ability to search complex questions effectively using available databases.

· Ability to positively interact with a diverse population and uphold the University’s commitment to inclusive excellence.

· Knowledge of resources, programs, and services available to libraries with thorough knowledge in the area of reference services.

· Knowledge of current library information science principles and practices.

· Ability to project a positive public image and to provide superior customer service. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

· Ability to work independently and to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other College departments, community groups, and other libraries.

· Ability to supervise Library student employees in work tasks and functional duties.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

· Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in noise, odors, etc.

· Regular interruptions to assist library patrons.

· May spend extended periods at terminal or on telephone requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.

· May be required to walk, stand, bend, reach, and lift books and materials.
