Access Services Supervisor, New England College of Optometry (Boston)

The New England College of Optometry (NECO) prepares the next generation of eye care providers, educators, and innovators through a rigorous curriculum and extensive clinical experiences. NECO graduates compassionate and skilled optometrists prepared to practice in diverse settings. Located in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay, the College is a small, independent graduate institution that currently enrolls students from 34 states and 8 countries. The College has its primary didactic teaching location at 424 Beacon Street, Boston and an additional Clinical Training Center located within the largest of its three owned and operated eye clinics (Boston-Commonwealth).

NECO has an opening for a Library Access Services Coordinator. Reporting to the Director of Library Services, this position performs a variety of duties related to the support and provision of library services, including but not limited to managing circulation, coordinating course reserves, supporting interlibrary loan/document delivery, processing serials and monographs, and implementing programs. This full-time position has a work schedule of Monday-Friday (35 hours/week) but the schedule is subject to change with advanced notice to accommodate staffing or student schedules.



• Oversee the efficient circulation of materials, run circulation reports, and maintain the circulation manual

• Serve as the primary point of contact to patrons at the service desk, projecting an image of helpfulness, efficiency and professionalism

• Routinely evaluate circulation policies and practices

• Create and maintain patron records

• Collaborate with Business Office to bill students for overdue materials

• Participate on committees such as the Fenway Library Organization’s Circ Doc Committee

Information services:

• Offer assistance and instruction in the use of library catalog and online resources

• Instruct patrons in use of equipment

• Refer complex reference questions to specialized library staff

Student worker management:

• Hire, schedule, train and manage a large group of work study students (typically 20+) each term

• Maintain Library Aide handbook

• Collaborate with the Director of Library Services and the Financial Aid Office to manage Federal and non-Federal work study student budgets

Technical services/interlibrary loan support:

• Check in and claim print serials

• Manage bindery shipments

• Prepare newly-cataloged materials for circulation

• Collaborate with Reference and Outreach Librarian and Saturday Library Assistant to receive, transmit and fulfill article and book requests from the collection or from interlibrary loan/document delivery sources

Collection maintenance:

• Routinely evaluate which library materials are candidates for weeding

• Maintain the stacks through regular activities such as shifting and labeling

• Revise collection development policy as necessary, in collaboration with other library staff

Course reserves management:

• Collaborate with faculty to determine materials for course reserve

• Prepare and manage course reserves, including both print and online materials

Oral history project:

• Prepare, conduct, and record interviews with members of the optometric community

• Create transcripts from interviews

• Hire, train, and manage work study students who work on the project

Other related duties:

• Oversee care and maintenance of loanable technology such as iPads, etc., and maintain orderly public service areas

• Order and maintain inventory of office supplies

• Obtain and compile statistics on library services and collections

• Perform other related duties as necessitated by the position or as assigned


• At least six months of experience in a library setting

• Experience in an academic library desired

• Retail and/or supervisory experience desired

• Mature, dependable and reliable work ethic is a must!
