Assistant Director, Holyoke Public Library (Holyoke)

The Assistant Director aides the Library Director in all professional and supervisory work in the overall management of the library.  Manages several major functional areas of the library, including personnel schedule, calendar, and meeting room management, and Public Services areas.  Serves as Acting Director in the Library Director’s absence. Expected to take on major responsibility and make quick and well-informed decisions. Must be comfortable working in an urban library environment. Must be a team player and willing to engage fully with the culture of the library, including attending library, consortium, and community events.

Full-time position: 35hours/week. Monday-Thursday, 1pm-8:30pm; Friday/Saturday, 8:30am-4pm

Some major duties include, but not limited to:
· In the absence of the Director, manages the daily operations of the Library.
· Assists the Library Director in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and library users.  Responds to all building emergencies, taking appropriate action when necessary.  Responsible for handling patron complaints, difficult patron interactions, and other potential security issues.
· Maintains a strong presence in the public areas of the library, readily available to assist library users and staff, especially during busy times of the day.
· Coordinates personnel services for the Library.  Assists in recruitment, evaluation, selection, and hiring of new employees and volunteers.  Assists Director and Department Heads in supervision of all library staff. Responsible for ensuring adequate staff coverage for all Library Departments.  Works in all Library Departments as needed.
· Advises collection development throughout the library. Helps with adult programming.
· Assists the Library Director in long range planning, goal setting, and policy development related to Library services, personnel and building issues.


This is a high level administrative position that requires thorough knowledge, good independent judgment, tact, hands on experience, and the ability to manage a moderate sized staff. Ability to deal with all members of the staff and public in a courteous and tactful manner; work with a high level of detail; prioritize multiple tasks and to deal effectively with interruptions. Strong leadership skills and the ability to identify and analyze complex issues and develop appropriate recommendations.

Preferred abilities and knowledge
· Extensive knowledge of library principles and practices.
· Management, planning, and supervisory skills, and ability to function as part of a management team.
· Ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
· Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with a wide variety of people.
· Extensive knowledge of collection development principles and practices.
· Knowledge and skills in using automated library systems, and electronic information systems

Masters in Library Science from an A.L.A.-accredited institution preferred; Recommended minimum qualification of BA/BS and two years of library experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
