Library Assistant, Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library (Gloucester)

Gloucester, a beautiful small city of 30,000 on Cape Ann and one of the oldest in the commonwealth, will be celebrating its 400th in 2023. It is defined by its relationship to the sea, its long history of arts and innovation, and the diversity of culture and economic status represented by natives and newcomers. The library is located in the heart of the downtown as part of the sacred triangle with the Cape Ann Museum and the City Hall. The Sawyer Free Library, the largest public library on Cape Ann, provides innovative and responsive library services to residents and visitors. 

This position is primarily focused on providing excellent public service, implementing innovative and technology-based programming for 'tweens, teens, and new adults, and improving the user experience with a team of able and supportive professional and paraprofessional staff. The library administration is committed to your professional development hand-in-hand with the advancement of the library of the future.

Responsibilities:  

Under the general supervision of the assistant library director and the department head, the library assistant helps maintain the daily operations of the library by performing varied circulation, interlibrary loan and network transfer tasks, materials processing and shelf management.  Responsible for providing excellent customer service in person and remotely and creating a safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages.  

Duties: 
• Help establish and maintain a high standard of customer service by responding to library users needs and questions in a friendly, efficient manner.
• Perform full range of circulation duties efficiently.
• Answer the telephone. 
• Maintain confidentiality of information on individual library users.
• In coordination with the department, participate in creating, planning and implementing programming.  
• Assist in creating displays and promotional materials.
• Assist in managing the library’s collections by weeding, keeping shelves properly organized, and selecting, recommending and ordering new materials. 
• Assist library users in the basic operation of library computers and devices.
• Enforce library policies.
• Participate in professional development activities available in Massachusetts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
• High School Diploma required.
• Commitment to and ability to provide excellent public service.
• Excellent communication skills in listening, speaking, and writing.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative to successfully complete tasks.
• Ability to learn the integrated library services platform.
• Ability to learn and use new computer applications and devices.
• Working knowledge of Office applications.
• Able to be flexible, dependable, and meet the scheduling requirements.

Environment/Physical Requirements:
• Ability to use a computer workstation and telephone.
• Ability to frequently lift and move books, equipment and materials up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk and climb stairs without relief for sustained periods.
• Ability to perform duties in a busy library environment.  

Preferred Qualifications:  
• One year of related employment.
• Customer service experience.
• Comfortable with current technologies and troubleshooting.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Experience interacting constructively and sensitively with people with challenging behaviors.
