Children's Librarian, Gale Free Library (Holden)

The Children’s Librarian is responsible for all aspects of services and programs for children and those working with children in accordance with policies established by the Board of Library Trustees and administered by the Library Director and serves on the library’s management team.  The Children’s Librarian reports to the Library Director.

This is a full time benefited position of 35 hours a week with nights and weekend shifts required. The beginning salary is $53,659 a year.



DUTIES:

Children’s services

·       Develops and maintains collections of children’s materials which meet community needs.

·       Has responsibility for providing user-oriented reference, reader’s advisory and library instruction services, which includes Internet, databases, new technologies. Also responsible for creating activities for children of different ages, designed to inform, entertain, and introduce the library to the community.

·       Stays aware of current philosophies and practices of children’s services and of available materials, programs, and technologies.

·       Trains and supervises children’s support staff.

·       Promotes children’s services by a variety of methods; arranges for bulletin board displays and special exhibits.

·       Represents the library to the community, schools, and local agencies providing services to children.

·       Responds to the needs of parents, caregivers, and other adults who use the resources of the children’s room.

·       Participates in the ongoing assessment of library’s program of service and planning for the future and is a member of the library’s management team.

·       Reviews children’s services policies, evaluates operational procedures and makes recommendations for improvements to the Library Director.

·       In consultation with the Library Director, plans, develops and recommends annual goals to be accomplished by children’s services.

·       Working with the Assistant Director, has responsibility of maintaining hardware and software for all computers, peripherals, and photocopiers in the children’s room.

·       Assists the Library Director with ongoing assessment of library’s program of service and planning for the future and is a member of the senior management team.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

·       Genuine caring and respect for children and a demonstrated ability to work well with children and adults.

·       Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of children’s services, and of children’s literature and information resources.

·       Educational qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university or currently enrolled in an MLS program.

·       Experience; three years of experience working with children/young people in a public or school library, with steadily increasing responsibility.

·       Required to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule. During the six week summer session, no vacation time can be taken.

·       Must have effective verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in normal office and library environment.

Includes standing, sitting, walking, reaching, stooping.

Operates a variety of office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination, including computer terminals.

Ability to move loaded book trucks, reach all shelves, rearrange metal shelving, carry books and other items; ability to stand, walk, crouch, reach, stoop, sit; ability to talk, hear, use close and distant vision, depth perception, adjust to focus; ability to read, write.

Occasional travel is required to attend meetings, workshops, etc.
