Director of Collections & Access, Wheaton College (Norton)

Wheaton College (MA) seeks a diverse pool of applicants for the position of Director of Collections & Access in Library Services.

Position Summary

The Director of Collections & Access reports to the Dean of Library Services and serves on the library’s leadership team. The Director leads a collaborative and innovative team of librarians, professional staff, and support staff who develop, manage, maintain, and provide access to library collections, spaces, and services, all in support of student success. The director is responsible for creating and implementing a strategic, inclusive, and forward-looking vision for the library’s collections and services, one aligned with College and HELIN Consortium priorities and responsive to curricular, technological, and library changes. The director partners with faculty, library staff, and campus colleagues on issues related to collections and library access, including copyright. On the library leadership team, the director works with peers in research and instruction, media services, and archives and digital initiatives to ensure use of library services and collections becomes a regular part of each student’s Wheaton experience.

Essential Responsibilities

Management

Leads, manages, develops, assesses, and advocates for Collections & Access department staff and services.
Leads the department in creating an inclusive, equitable, and respectful environment that values and affirms the diversity of the college community.
Achieves operational excellence through continuous development of staff, effective allocation of financial and staff resources, ongoing assessment, and adoption of best practices.
Plans and manages the library collections budget.
Develops strategic plans for library information resources in all formats.
Leads library-wide efforts around collection development, copyright, and open educational resources.
Leads and contributes to library strategic planning discussions; develops, implements, and assesses library strategic initiatives as a member of the library leadership team.

Collections & Access

Partners with faculty and library colleagues to build and move forward a strategic, integrated view of library collections, inclusive of student research needs and curricular transformation.
Creates assessment criteria for local physical and digital collections.
Analyzes the use of local physical and digital collections using varied tools and criteria.
Develops collection development, management, and access guidelines based on assessment and analysis activities.
Consults with faculty to determine priorities for local collections.
Implements collection management and maintenance projects.
Investigates and promotes non-traditional information resources, including open educational resources and open access publications.
Investigates consortial and other partnerships supporting the provision of scholarly information resources.
Works with library colleagues to determine the most effective discovery tools for information resources.
Assesses gifts of books and other information resources.
Participates in local, regional, and national professional communities of practice.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program or significant, relevant work experience in an academic institution.
Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience with selection, analysis, and disposition of information resources in all formats in an academic library.
Experience with budget management and vendor/license negotiations.
Relevant professional experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, campus partners, vendors, consortia, and publishers.
Knowledge of library collection management and access services trends and best practices.
Demonstrated proficiency with discovery systems, automated library systems, usage tools and standards.
Demonstrated project management experience and supervisory experience.
