Librarian I - Teen Specialist, Waltham Public Library (Waltham)

The Waltham Public Library Teen Room has just become its own department, and we’re excited to build on a strong run of innovation in teen library services and programming by adding a new full-time staff member to the team. We’re looking to add a go-getter with diverse interests who can relate to an energetic group of 6-12th graders with humility, patience, and humor. We are particularly interested in candidates excited to focus on building stronger relationships with our middle schools. But our priority is to find someone who makes teens love to spend time in the Teen Room. What does that look like? You want to make a substantive difference in the lives of middle and high schoolers. You’re excited to try things libraries have never seen before. You work to empower youth to pursue their needs and interests. You cultivate positivity and inclusion without silencing expression. You’re comfortable in controlled chaos. You can wrangle without power-tripping. You work at the pace of 21st century technology but can slow down to be present when someone needs a friendly ear. Or—if you’re not quite there yet—you’re excited to figure it out.

Duties include: Works under the direction of the Teen Department Head, but also in conjunction with the Children’s Department. Responsible for assisting in all aspects of the Teen Room, collection, readers’ advisory support, programming, outreach and services; Proactively builds relationships with teen users and families; Liaison to Middle and High Schools and other teen-oriented agencies; Helps maintain Teen Room web & social media presence; Serves the general public on any public service desk; Provides assistance in locating information in person and on the telephone. Assists patrons in using and troubleshooting technology. Responds to patrons’ interests, questions, and concerns. Interprets and enforces library policies. Participates in Minuteman group(s) and other professional development workshops; Refers patrons to other departments and institutions as appropriate; Performs other duties at the discretion of supervisors.

35 hours per week including a minimum of one evening/week, plus at least one Saturday and Sunday/month, including July and August.

Qualifications

ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred, but a Master’s Degree in a related field will be considered; more than 1 year computer/electronic database experience; 5 years’ professional library experience, preferably in a youth services department, or any equivalent combination of education and experience; strong interest and comfort in dealing with teens; comfort and confidence in all matters of technology including experience with social media; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library work ability to work with library staff and a diverse general public with wide ranging needs in a tactful and courteous manner; ability to perform under pressure, including handling emergencies; excellent communication, customer service and instructional abilities; extreme creativity. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening, a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) and a background check. Selected candidate will be required to submit three letters of professional reference  (Must be less than 2 yrs old. Also must be signed or sent directly from source.)
