Substitute Youth Services Librarian I, Cary Memorial Library (Lexington)

Cary Memorial Library has openings for Youth Services Librarians to join our pool of substitutes.  The schedule will vary so we are seeking candidates with flexibility in their schedule during the week and/or the ability to cover an occasional evening or weekend shift. This is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door at Cary Library, one of the busiest libraries in Massachusetts! 

Youth Services Librarians work in the Children’s Room and in the Teen Room.  This position performs a full range of library responsibilities, including providing reference and reader’s advisory services, and assisting with circulation tasks including checking materials in and out, handling network transfers, issuing library cards, and answering telephones. 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited degree program. They will be self-motivated, will possess the ability to establish rapport with patrons of all ages, as well as demonstrate attention to detail.  PC proficiency, familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, and experience using III’s Sierra software are required.

Candidates should also demonstrate a respect for diversity and promote inclusive services. Previous experience working with children or teens, and knowledge of the developmental stages of youth, as well as children’s and teen literature is required. Language skills are a plus, particularly Chinese or Korean.
