Adult Services/Reference Librarian, Westwood Public Library (Westwood)

The Westwood Public Library is seeking a creative, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, and enthusiastic professional committed to providing excellent customer service in a dynamic and engaging team environment. The Adult Services/Reference Librarian will proactively provide diverse and vibrant programming, strong Readers’ Advisory, and robust materials collection development to support the Library’s mission and strategic plan.  This position is 35 hours per week and reports directly to the Head of Adult Services. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

·         Provides a broad range of library services, including reference and Readers’ Advisory services.

·         Keeps current in aspects of librarianship: e.g., technology, literature, news, emerging trends.

·         Incorporates new and existing technology as appropriate to enhance library resources and services. 

·         Instructs patrons in use of library tools, including online database searches and downloadable and streaming media apps. 

·         Processes inter-library loans, including books and periodicals.

·         Proctors exams and reserves meeting rooms. 

·         Provides instruction and basic troubleshooting for public computers, laptops, tablets, audio-visual projection equipment and other technological devices; trains and assists staff and patrons on use of library technology and library services platforms.

·         Organizes and publicizes a wide variety of weekly and monthly adult programs, activities and outreach. 

·         Seeks and applies for additional funding opportunities to expand and enhance library services and patron experience.

·         Ability to design effective print and non-print materials (including social media initiatives) to publicize literacy, library resources, services and programs.

·         Contributes relevant material to the Library’s web presence, including the creation of new and original content, and updates WPL online presence and social media. 


M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited institution and minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience in library operations.  Proven track record working with adults, particularly in a public library setting. Must have a solid understanding of technology and social media and excellent public relations and research skills; self-starter who requires minimal supervision; flexible and an enthusiastic team player. Thorough knowledge of library principles and practices, particularly as they relate to library advocacy and outreach, including such tenets as equity, diversity and inclusion, intellectual freedom, literacy, and patron privacy.
