Job Description:

The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Academic Counselor provides program participants with advising, career guidance and assistance in developing the necessary skills to earn a Certificate of Completion and/or Associate's Degree, and transfer to a four-year institution. The Academic Counselor works cooperatively with program staff, academic departments and other student service areas to maximize impact, sustain coordinated services and support the academic success of participants.  The Academic Counselor provides appropriate referrals - both academic and non-academic - to help reduce barriers to student progress, persistence and graduation.  The Academic Counselor reports to the TRIO SSS Director and performs other duties as assigned and deemed necessary to achieve program objectives.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Assists with the identification, selection, recruitment, and retention of eligible participants
Assists participants with course selection and registration; interprets placement and assessment test scores to address participants' academic needs
Monitors and reports on student academic performance and progress toward certificate and degree completion, conducts follow-up, and accurately records all counseling activities/contacts
Develops, reviews and updates the Individualized Academic Success Plan (IASP) of assigned caseload
Assists participants in developing career goals and identifying potential career fields
Assists participants in identifying scholarships and completing the financial aid/FAFSA process to ensure maximum award
Collaborates with program staff to plan academic year services, develop workshop topics, strategize and implement services necessary to facilitate student success and ensure program goals are achieved
Supports development and assessment of academic interventions, delivery of services and the preparation of various reports
Develops and oversees the implementation of workshops and skill-building seminars
Works cooperatively to provide career exploration activities and administer career assessments and inventories
Contributes to a work environment that encourages and promotes diversity
Assists with special projects as needed, e.g. orientation and registration, program presentations at on-and off-campus events, preparation of annual performance reports, and grant applications
Works closely with faculty and other student service areas to deliver comprehensive supports
Provides updates, information and feedback to the Director and communicates areas of concern
Maintains interoffice affability with academic departments and other student service areas
Participates in professional development training, and on college committees as assigned
Demonstrates 100% time-on-task to implementing program activities; adherence to college and routine office procedures, and regulations governing federal TRIO programs
Other duties as assigned in support of the department's goals and College Student Success Plan

Qualifications

Requirements:

A Master's degree in counseling, psychology, student personnel, social work, education or a related field is required; three (3) years of direct student service experience; experience in career counseling and assessment, and complete knowledge of academic and career requirements for successfully completing an associate's degree and pursuing a baccalaureate degree. 
Knowledge of advising practices, counseling models and concepts that have proven successful with diverse student populations; a strong commitment to the educational advancement of low-income, first generation students; demonstrated ability to work with students from various backgrounds. 
Strong organizational, customer service, problem-solving, listening, oral and written communication skills; curriculum development and teaching skills for facilitating workshops and seminars; knowledge and use of various career assessment tools, database applications and software; and a working knowledge of student information systems, database applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
 Familiarity with grant-funded programs, and ability to work within college policies, state guidelines and federal regulations.
Preferred skills/qualifications

Certified to administer and interpret MBTI and other career-related inventories; personal experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles; and prior work experience with community college students, GEAR UP or Federal TRIO programs preferred.

Working conditions/Physical Demands

Works in an office setting.   Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work   Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.  This person needs to move about inside the office to access office machinery.    Constantly operates a computer and other equipment i.e. copier.  This person frequently communicates with students, faculty and staff.    Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
