Library Assistant, Winthrop Public Library and Museum (Winthrop)

           This is a responsible position in a public library involving support services as well as direct services to patrons.  The purpose of this position is to assist patrons in a variety of ways, and to handle library materials as they circulate in and out of the library.  This position helps to build and maintain a positive image of the library by providing courteous, equal and appropriate service to all.  The circulation assistant has no supervisory responsibilities.

            Work involves responsibility for circulation desk functions using an automated circulation system, including checking materials in and out, collecting fines, locating materials, answering phones, providing direction on computer, copier and printer use, and library functions.  The position also requires shelving and retrieving materials as needed.  This position is typically part-time therefore requires flexibility in scheduling.  May work mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends.  


         Minimum requirement of an Associate’s Degree.  Previous public library experience at a circulation desk is a plus.  Previous customer service experience very helpful.  Employee should be pleasant, eager to help, dependable, reliable, flexible, and must enjoy serving the public.  In addition, the employee should be well-read, and eager to learn.  Considerable skill in computer use required.  Proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Publisher, online calendar and other software.  Comfortable with other technology such as iPad, Chromebook, etc.   Able to learn new computer and database skills.  Complete job description available upon request.
