Librarian, Applewild School (Fitchburg)

Applewild School seeks a collaborative, dynamic and innovative librarian to meet the needs of students (preschool through 9th grade) at our Fitchburg campus. The librarian fulfills a variety of roles to provide rich educational experiences in each of the three pillars of the library curriculum: love of reading, information literacy skills, and digital citizenship.

●     Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and experience matching children and faculty with books.

●     Strong teaching skills and ability to develop instructional materials.

●     Strong experience with technology - both as a user and for instruction.

●     Strong ability to communicate and work collaboratively with faculty, students, volunteers, administrators, technology department, and other members of the school community.

●     Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.

●     Sense of humor, flexible

●     Leader

○     Define policies, guide and direct all activities related to the library.

○     Manage all operational responsibilities for two library spaces.

○     Prepare and manage budget.

○     Represent the department on decision making teams.

○     Select, procure, catalog, and process books and resources that support the curriculum and student interests.

○     Lead, model, and coach the use of effectively integrated technology skills.

○     Train, schedule, and work with volunteers.

●     Instructional Partner

○     Collaborate with faculty in curriculum planning and instruction to teach the full range of literacy skills in engaging learning experiences and assessments that support metacognitive learning practices.

○     Partner with faculty to identify and integrate practices that encourage independent reading.

●     Information Specialist

○     Direct the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats.

○     Instruct faculty and students in the use of information resources including subscription databases, Noodle Tools, the library catalog, and other resources as developed or purchased.

○     Develop, adapt, and deliver age-appropriate instruction around the ethical use of information (copyright, fair use, and intellectual property).

○     Offer flexible, needs-driven professional development to faculty around information literacy and educational technology.

●     Teacher

○     Teach fixed classes in grades Preschool - 5.

○     Collaborate with teachers and tutors to support the work of students in grades 6-8

●     Community Member

○     Participate in academic or review committees to support integration of independent reading and information literacy skills.

○     As one of the few teachers that work with students PreK-8, support whole school community events.

●     Model Core Competencies


❖     MLS or master’s degree in library science and/or library certification required.

❖     School library experience or teaching experience preferred.

❖     Experience with Responsive Classroom or other SEL curriculum.

❖     Experience with Google Apps for Education suite preferred.
