Reference Assistant, Gale Free Library (Holden)

Under the direction of the Head of Reference Services, the Reference Assistant provides full reference service to library patrons, as well as researching, planning and implementing some Adult Programs. The Reference Assistant performs a variety of specialized library tasks, as well as routine clerical assignments which support the effective operation of the Reference Department.  


·       Provides reader’s advisory and reference and information services on-site, online and by telephone, following standard principles and practices and the policies of the library.

·       Assists the public in using all available information resources, including print, online databases, e-books, the Internet and referrals.

·       Uses standard and recommended reference interview techniques to ensure patron satisfaction.

·       Assists with Adult Programming, including researching potential programming opportunities, and coordinating, promoting and carrying out those programs.

·       Assists with Library publicity. Includes: creating marketing and promotional materials for Library programs, resources and services; creating and disseminating press releases; assisting with online publicity.

·       Assists the public with the use of the library’s equipment, including computers, printers, photocopiers and other devices.


·       Demonstrated ability to work effectively with public and staff.

·       Knowledge of basic reference resources desirable.

·       Typing ability and strong organization skills.

·       Experienced with computer technologies, including database searching, Microsoft Office, and Internet. Education: Bachelor’s degree.

·       May be required to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule.

·       Ability to troubleshoot basic computer issues, comfort with emerging technologies (e-readers, handheld devices etc.)


·       Works in normal office and library environment.

·       Includes standing, sitting, walking, reaching, stooping.

·       Operates a variety of office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination including computer terminals.

·       Ability to move loaded book trucks, reach all shelves, rearrange metal shelving, carry books and other items; ability to stand, walk, crouch, reach, stoop, sit; ability to talk, hear, use close and distant vision, depth perception, adjust to focus; ability to read, write.

·       Occasional travel is required to attend meetings, workshops, etc.
