IDEAS-EVENING & WEEKEND LIBRARIAN, Northeastern University Library (Boston)

You will oversee the library’s evening and weekend customer services and manage the operations of the Help & Information Desk and The Access Point.

You will hire, develop, and evaluate IDEAS evening & weekend staff which include 2 full-time employees, 5-7 graduate students, and 50+ work study students.

You will assist in strategic planning, implementing new self-service opportunities for patrons, and investigating emerging technologies.

You will work with colleagues across the Research & Learning Division to achieve consistent standards of service excellence based upon the “Greet, Listen, Answer, Offer” model, developing and expanding upon existing training to cultivate a welcoming environment.

You will serve as a liaison to campus partners such as ITS, Facilities, Husky Card Services, Student Affairs, NUPD, and Northeast Security, and provide input for emergency preparedness planning.

You will monitor the part-time employee budget ($200K annually) and the budget for the Library’s overnight security officers ($200K annually).

You will oversee the physical delivery of materials to/from the Remote Annex and the Library Stacks, ensuring accuracy and timely receipt/return of materials.

You may be asked to serve as a system administrator for one or more of the following systems: Ex Libris Alma (fulfillment configuration), When to Work (scheduling software), and the Springshare LibApps suite.

Hours: Sunday 10am – 7pm and Monday – Thursday 1pm – 10pm


Manage Services
Coordinate the work of the Help & Information Desk and The Access Point. 

Establish service goals and expectations that center the needs of a diverse user population.

Communicate changes in service policies and workflows to ensure consistent standards across open hours.  

Be the library’s decision maker during evening and weekend hours, including building emergencies.

Supervise Staff
Hire, train and develop the evening & weekend staff and student workers.

Encourage and model collaborative teamwork within the IDEAS Department.

Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Provide Research Assistance
Offer research assistance during evening and weekend service hours when the Research Help Desk is closed. 


Two or more years of related experience in personnel and/or operations management
Proven experience delivering a broad range of customer services to a diverse user population
Ability to think creatively, problem solve effectively, and work collaboratively in a team environment that is constantly evolving
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Be innovative, self-motivated, service-oriented, and resourceful.   
Knowledge of newly emerging information technologies, instructional and research methodologies, and trends in academic libraries and higher education is required.
