Cataloger/Processor, Westfield Athenaeum (Westfield)

General Description:  Responsible for all activities related to materials acquisition, processing and classification of Westfield Athenaeum library materials.



Essential Duties:

Organizes and works with the Technical Services staff to support the overall goals of the library.
Recommends and implements appropriate changes in technical policies and procedures.
Supervises the cataloging, classification and processing of library materials. 
Trains Technical Services staff on procedures, policies and assigns duties and projects
Works at other public service desks, as needed
Imports bibliographic records from an external database of bibliographic records to internal library database. Researches records and makes updates as needed. Creates original records as required.
Plans, organizes and implements special projects as needed, or as determined by Director
Receives new collection material, i.e. books, documents, periodicals, etc.
Assigns appropriate Dewey Decimal Classification number and LC Headings to print and non-print materials- modifying when necessary
Performs original cataloging as required. Delete discarded library material from database
Assess items sent for repairs, changes of information on records or other problems
Set up accounts with Ingram or BT for new staff; communicate with vendors when changing processing requirements.
Attend Technical Services Round tables as able.
14.    Works with the Head of Adult Services to streamline work procedures using professional standards

Maintain shelf list for items in the Westfield Room
Keeps aware of library cataloging trends and recommends work procedures following professional standards; communicating possible changes with the Head of Adult Services
Uses library database system and participates in related bibliographic activities.
Provides training and supervision of the various automated activities within the department
Prepares statistical and narrative reports of some complexity for supervisor as needed
Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision from the Head of Adult Services and general supervision from the Library Director.   

Supervision Exercised: Under the direction of the Head of Adult Services, supervises Technical Services staff.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Good working knowledge of the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques of library cataloging and classification 

·         Functional knowledge of public library organizations and collections; Library of Congress Subject Headings; Machine Readable Cataloging Records (MARC); Dewey Decimal Classification system; Online Computer Library Center (OCLC); database fundamentals

·         Good  knowledge of standard bibliographic sources, bibliographic form, and verification tools

·          Ability to apply principles of library science to solve practical problems in situations where only limited standardization exists.

·         A working knowledge of computer applications for library services.

·         Ability to work courteously and effectively with library staff and library patrons.

·         Sufficiently skilled in human relations to perform in this capacity with reasonable success, and interact professionally with officials, subordinate, staff, the Director and a diverse public.

·         Ability to prepare concise and clear oral or written reports.

·         Strong public service attitude and ability to relate to patrons of all ages, abilities and backgrounds with respect, discretion and patience



Working Conditions:

Work is usually performed in an office environment during our regular business hours.



Physical Effort:

 · Primarily sedentary work, but also requires standing, walking, stooping or crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, grasping, lifting, feeling, hearing and talking. 

· Requires the ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. 

· Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to adjust the eye to bring objects into sharp focus, clarity of vision at 20 or more feet, and the ability to distinguish colors. 

· Must be able to concentrate on detailed information over an extended period of time
