Job description: Library assistant

10-12 hours a week, including weekends and possible evening hours

The Elizabeth Taber Library is looking for a part time library assistant position at a small public library in the seaside community of Marion, MA. Library experience is preferred, particularly familiarity with the SAILS library network and Workflows operating systems.  

Under the direction and management of the Director, the Library Assistant engages in all facets of library services, policies and procedures, and provides all patron-based services at the Circulation Desk including but not limited to:

·         Greeting patrons as they enter the Library & offering assistance

·         Answering patron requests via phone and email

·         Maintaining and operating computers/fax/printers for patrons & staff

·         Performs circulation desk procedures, such as checking materials in and out, registering patrons and collecting fines

·         Providing patrons with assistance using the computer, searching the catalog, doing research, with reader’s advisory and answering reference questions

·         Processing new material for the collection

·         Maintaining clean, safe workspace and refilling janitorial and paper supplies

·         Evaluating & recommending development of operating Policies & Procedures

·         Shelving library material and shelf reading

·         Scheduling/preparing meeting rooms

·         Performing opening/closing duties

·         Working on weeding and collection development projects

Physical & Mental Requirements

Work is performed in an office setting, subject to quiet to moderate noise.  Up to three-quarters of the time is spent standing, walking, stooping or reaching with hands & arms.  Up to three-quarters of the time is spent spend using hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls & to reach with hands & arms.  The employee is additionally required to sit, talk & hear.  Frequently required to lift up to ten pounds, occasional lifting is required up to thirty pounds, seldom does the incumbent lift up to sixty pounds.  Specific vision abilities include close vision & the ability to adjust focus to both print & electronic text.


Library experience is preferred, particularly familiarity with the SAILS library network and Workflows operating systems.
