Circulation Supervisor, Scituate Town Library (Scituate)

This position is a 35 hour per week benefited position with the Scituate Library Department. 
The position is a Grade 1A ($2,144.18 to $2,425.93 bi-weekly) and is covered under the terms of the SEIU 888 AMPs collective bargaining agreement. Schedule and shifts to be determined, but evenings and one weekend day every fourth weekend will be required.

Qualifications

Statement of Duties--
Responsible for daily operations of the Circulation Department, which includes planning, organizing, and supervising the circulation desk and circulation of materials. Duties include but are not limited to overseeing library technicians, shelvers, and pages, keeping staff aware of library policies and procedures, establishing circulation desk schedules, and general public assistance.


Supervision--
-Works under the general supervision of the Library Director; is familiar with work routines and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently and without specific instructions.
-Provides general supervision for all circulation staff; providing staff with ongoing instructions and guidance. Ensures that subordinates are conversant in Library policies and procedures.
-Access to confidential information related to confidential employee matters and library patron records.


Job Environment--
Work at this level consists of varied work assignments, procedures and techniques, requiring evaluation and analysis to decide an appropriate response necessary to resolve the problem.
Ongoing contacts with the public using the library. Other contact is with regional library network, other Town employees, vendors, and local organizations.


Essential Functions--

-Oversees the operation of the circulation desk to include the registration of new patrons, processing of overdue notices and bills, book reserves and the check-out of all materials.
-Provides training and supervision to members of staff and establishes work schedules related to this area and makes work assignments.
-Manages cash taken in at Circulation Desk and makes weekly deposits to Town Treasurer as well as weekly and monthly cash reports.
-Provides reference services and sits on the reference desk as needed.
-Participates in network committees and attends workshops and meetings as necessary to update skills.
-Participates in and sometimes leads in-house committees and working groups.
-Understands technology and can assist with limited reference duties such as downloading e-books, accessing databases, and using the catalog on a range of computers and devices.
-Performs daily activities and operations of the library, including but not limited to shelving, organization of book displays, and circulation duties as needed.
-Executing other related duties as necessary.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience--
Bachelor’s Degree with commensurate library experience required. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) preferred. Two to three years of supervisory experience is desired, as well as experience with scheduling.
Completion of the Basic Library Techniques courses within the first two years of employment will be required.


Knowledge, Ability and Skill--
Knowledge:
• Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology.
• Thorough knowledge of circulation department operations
Ability to:
• Supervise others including training and addressing, with the Director, any disciplinary issues;
• Work independently;
• Handle a great many details, some simultaneously, with accuracy;
• Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing;
• Research information for a wide variety of library users;
• Provide excellent customer service to patrons.


Physical and Mental Requirements--
Work is performed in a library setting, subject to quiet to moderate noise. Standing, walking, sitting, stooping or reaching with hands and arms is a requirement of the position. Hand and finger motion with enough manual dexterity to use computers and handle library items is necessary. The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
