Literacy Program Coordinator, Nevins Memorial Library (Methuen)


The Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the affiliate’s ESOL and basic literacy tutoring services for adults in the community in accordance with guidelines from Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Nevins Library. 

This position reports to the Reference Department Head and is responsible for providing customer service to patrons at the reference desk for approximately 15 hours per week. One night per week and Saturdays on a regular rotation are required.


1.    Coordinate volunteer recruitment, orientation, screening, training, and matching
2.    Coordinate student recruitment, intake, assessment, and matching
3.    Coordinate professional support activities for tutors and students, including advising and transitions to next steps
4.    Maintain a collaborative relationship with other community organizations and agencies
5.    Maintain accurate program, tutor, student, and financial records
6.    Submit required data to LVM for timely entry into state database
7.    Participate in program planning and evaluation, locally and as part of the LVM program network
8.    Attend all LVM coordinators’ meetings and trainings
9.    Supervise volunteers and provide advice and guidance as necessary
10. Develop programming to serve the needs of the community, including conversation groups and citizenship classes
11. Staff reference desk, providing computer help and information to patrons


Minimum required qualifications: 

1.    Must have a BA or BS, preferably in a field pertaining to education
2.    Spanish proficiency strongly preferred
3.    Experience with adult literacy and basic education, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), and volunteer programs
4.    Excellent organizational skills
5.    Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel), social media, WordPress
6.    Excellent interpersonal skills
7.    Flexibility and creativity 
8.    Genuine interest in expanding access to English language learning opportunities in the community

Physical Demands:

1.    In order to work with the public the employee must be able to hear and speak.
2.    The employee is required to stand for long periods of time, needs to use hands and fingers (including keyboarding) and is occasionally required to sit, walk, reach with arms and hands, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl and crouch.  
3.    The employee must be able to carry 40 pounds.
4.    The employee must be able to have vision appropriate for reading print and computer screens, sometimes small print.
