Reference Assistant, Gale Free Library (Holden)
Participates in planning, evaluating and executing the reference service program. Discusses and
makes recommendations to supervisor regarding policies, procedures, general operations and/or
reference services for the library.
Provides reader’s advisory and reference and information services on-site, online and by telephone,
following standard principles and practices and the policies of the library.
Assists with Adult Programming, including researching potential programming opportunities, and
coordinating, promoting and carrying out those programs (including online programming)
Assists the public in using all available print and digital information resources.
Assists with Library publicity. Includes: creating marketing and promotional materials for Library
programs, resources and services, and assisting with online publicity, including social media
Assists the public with the use of the library’s equipment, including computers, printers,
photocopiers and other devices.
Performs other reference tasks as assigned
20 Hours/Week; Week 1: Tues 1-5:30, Wed 1-5:30, Thurs 3:30-8, Sat 9-4
Week 2:Mon 1:30-5:30, Tues 1-5, Wed 1-5, Thurs 4-8, Fri 1:30-5:30
BENEFITS: VACATION - two weeks after 1 year of continuous service depending on how
many weeks worked in previous calendar year; three weeks after five years;
four weeks after ten years; five weeks after twenty years. Vacation is earned
on the anniversary date of the first year of employment and thereafter is
credited as of January 1. SICK LEAVE: After six months you will accumulate 6
days and will be credited with 1 day per month thereafter to a maximum of
180 days. PERSONAL DAYS: 3 days per fiscal year commencing after six
months of employment. Worcester Regional Retirement System; Health
Insurance and Life Insurance available; HOLIDAYS: 11 paid holidays per year.
REPORTS TO: Head of Reference Services
Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of reference services and of current reference
resources
Strong knowledge of and experience with a wide range of technology and digital resources
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with public and staff.
Strong organization skills.
Education: Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree with relevant three years of experience at a
public library in the Reference Department.
Experience: Three years public library experience which includes working with the public; reference
experience preferred. Evergreen experience is a plus.
Required to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule
