Head of Youth Services, Tyngsborough Public Library (Tyngsborough)

The Tyngsborough Public Library strives to provide an environment that allows all patrons to use library materials and resources in a safe, relaxed manner. The Library welcomes youth of all ages to use and enjoy its facilities, collections and programs.  The Head of Youth Services (HYS) performs professional administrative, supervisory and direct service work coordinating and managing the children’s collection, programs and activities. The HYS also coordinates young adult programming.

This position requires creativity, a high degree of flexibility and the ability to adapt to challenging times. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Develops and maintains the children's collection, develops and coordinates programming for children.

Coordinates services and programs with schools and outside agencies.

Responsible for the daily operation of the children's department.

Performs circulation functions. Coordinates maintenance of the children's department, including shelving books and tidying the area.

Provides reference and reader advisory services for patrons and staff; prepares reading lists for school and community distribution.

Provides training and assistance to patrons and staff in the use of the Library catalog, the Internet and electronic resources.

Maintains departmental budget for materials and programming.

Serves as liaison to the Friends of the Library. Coordinates the Friends Book Sales.

Attends informational and instructional meetings and workshops related to library operations and youth services.

Supervises Children's Department staff and volunteers.


MLS degree from an accredited institution and 2-3 years related experience in children's services or an equivalent combination of experience and education. 
Working knowledge of modern library practices and procedures, including computer applications for integrated library services and the use of electronic library information resources.
Thorough knowledge of children’s literature; basic knowledge of child development. 
Knowledge of current trends in library service to children.
Ability to work independently. 
Good planning and organizational skills.
Ability to develop and implement programs. 
Proficient in the use of a personal computer, spreadsheet, word processing and other relevant software, the Internet, telephone, calculator, typewriter, copy and fax machine.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, Library staff, volunteers, town officials and the general public
Ability to handle problem patrons and emergencies effectively.
Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Supervisory skills.
