Assistant Librarian, Instruction and Community Engagement/Tenure Track, Fitchburg State University (Fitchburg)

The Instruction and Community Engagement Librarian is a highly motivated, collaborative, inclusive and enthusiastic librarian who values an innovative student-centered approach to the development of information literacy skills and embraces the University's commitment to community engagement.  This position has a unique focus on local community civic engagement. As a member of the instruction team, they will develop, implement, promote, and assess the Library's information literacy instruction programs for undergraduates and graduate students. They provide research services.  They are active members of the Library Liaison program. They participate in collection development.


Instruction and Information Literacy:

Work in partnership with the Information Literacy Team Leader and the Instruction Team to develop, implement, promote, and assess the Library's information literacy instruction programs for undergraduates and graduate students, in alignment with the ACRL Framework.
Teach information literacy instruction sessions which may include upper-level and graduate research classes and technology workshops.
Participate in the Embedded Librarian program.
Collaborate with faculty to deliver information literacy instruction face-to-face and online, both synchronously and asynchronously.
Create course materials and curriculum content (print and digital) supporting the instruction program, including the creation and enhancement of online learning objects such as specialized research guides and multimedia tutorials.
Experiment with classroom technologies and pedagogies in order to improve teaching and adopt new methods of delivering information literacy content and fostering critical evaluation skills.
Collaborate with the Information Literacy Team Leader to coordinate and schedule instruction classes, instruction-related projects and initiatives.

Community Engagement:

Develop, implement, and promote  educational opportunities and cultural programming that attract and engage members of the local diverse community, including alumni, in alignment with the University's new Strategic Plan.
Collaborate with campus partners engaged in community engagement e.g., Adult Learners of the Fitchburg Area (ALFA), Early College programs, Crocker Center for Civic Engagement.
Forge sustainable partnerships with businesses, schools and community organizations that advance the University's mission while maximizing its positive impact on economic prosperity and social mobility in the region.
Support faculty and student scholarship that is community-focused and designed to address critical challenges and opportunities in the City of Fitchburg and North Central Massachusetts region.

Research Services: 

Participate in the research desk rotation.  Answer both ready reference and in-depth research questions by various methods, such as IM, email, appointments, phone, and in-person.
Participate in the adoption and evaluation of innovative uses of technology and other initiatives in support of research services for various student populations.
Develop collaborative ongoing relationships with faculty, staff, and various student populations to enhance research services offered in the library and support teaching and learning.

Shared Responsibilities:

Manage and participate in all aspects of collection development and librarian liaison responsibilities for assigned academic departments and subject areas.
Stays abreast of current trends and best practices in areas of responsibility and takes steps necessary to integrate these into the Library as appropriate.
Participate in the creation and management of related reports, statistics, and assessment of services. Contribute to the design and implementation of overall library assessment initiatives.
Perform related and other duties as assigned.

Campus Community:

Librarian responsibilities as a professional may include those in the following areas:

Participation as a professional in public service
Participation in and contributions to the improvements and development of the academic programs or academic services as those programs or services relate to the library
Participation in and contributions to the professional growth and development of the College Community
Librarians attend University functions such as annual faculty meetings, commencement, and convocations; and participate and carry out assignments for committees and departmental meetings.
Duties and responsibilities include some evening and weekend work, as needed to fulfill responsibilities of position.


Required at Hire:

A Masters of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent Master's degree, such as a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a Master of Library Science and Information Science (M.L.S./M.L.I.S.), with degree awarded before start date.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Ability to perform the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. 
Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual (Spanish-speaking).
Creative approach to the development of new services or programs; commitment to responsive and innovative service is essential.
Experience working with diverse, multicultural populations.
Interest, experience, or coursework related to academic librarianship, community programming and/or teaching.
Highly motivated, results-oriented and have the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
Ability to perform multiple tasks and responsibilities within established timeframes.
