Children's coordinator, Princeton Public Library (Princeton)

The children’s coordinator is responsible for organizing all children’s activities for kids up through third grade in consultation with the youth services librarian; seeing that library services are provided to all patrons in an effective, cost-efficient and courteous manner and in accordance with library policies and procedures; planning and conducting library programs (in-person and virtual); and all other duties as required.

The children’s coordinator provides library services primarily to our youngest patrons and students by 

·         providing reference and reader’s advisory services for children 

·         locating, suggesting and circulating materials for patrons using the online catalog

·         establishing cooperative working relationships with representatives of the local schools, other libraries, parents, teachers, and children

·        planning and conducting in-person and virtual children’s programs, including storytime, on a regular basis for children from birth through age 9. This includes programs in person as well as live on Zoom and/or recorded and uploaded to online platforms.

·         working in coordination with the youth services librarian in planning the Summer Reading Program, Saturday crafts, and other special activities

·         participating in selection of children’s books and circulating materials in conjunction with library director

·         participating in library associations, meetings, workshops at the consortium and state level to keep informed and current with library trends, techniques, and professional issues

The children’s coordinator also works at the main circulation desk, assisting patrons of all ages with checking materials in and out, reader’s advisory, and providing basic technical assistance with library computers.

Employee should possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work including reference tools, the Dewey Decimal System, and information technology; the ability to collect and analyze information and formulate plans and activities to accomplish goals and objectives; the ability to establish strong working relationships with the public and fellow staff members; the ability to identify and solve problems independently; flexibility in scheduling and in adapting to changes in the library; the ability to learn and operate the online library catalogue and other digital library resources, software applications, and remote meeting platforms. 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field with 2 years’ experience working in a library, school, or other public service environment which includes dealing with young children, or another combination of education and experience.

19.11/hour; 8 hours per week plus one Saturday per month. Schedule flexibility needed to conduct programs.
