Part-Time Reference Librarian (Weekend & Evening), Hudson Public Library (Hudson)

The Hudson Public Library has proudly served Hudson residents and neighboring communities since 1867. Our current location at Wood Square originally opened to the public in November 1905 and is approximately 15,000 square feet. Our team seeks to recruit a candidate who is passionate about library reference & technology services, and is highly interested in engaging with our diverse community of nearly 20,000 residents.

PT Reference Librarian Responsibilities:                                                                                                                                                                                           

Under the supervision of the Reference/Technology Librarian and guidance of the policies established by the Board of Library Trustees, the Reference Librarian is responsible for the following: 

• Provide reference, reader's advisory, and technology assistance to all library patrons. 

• Research and evaluate information requests for all library patrons, community organizations, and municipal departments. 

• Develop and lead instructional workshops on accessing and navigating library resources, technology, and equipment.  

• Assist with communications and publicity including, updates on the library's homepage, event calendar, community board, social media, etc. 

• Assist with managing and maintaining the reference collection and periodicals.

• Contribute toward departmental goals that enhance reference services in the areas of digital resources, databases, and emerging technologies.

Professional Knowledge & Skill Set:

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work, information technology, social media, and communications. Demonstrate proficiency with technology, digital content and resources, and integrated library systems.  Familiar with reference and information sources in all formats, including search and evaluation techniques.                                                                                                                                                              

Abilities: Function effectively, tactfully, and courteously with library staff and the general public; interpret patron needs quickly and accurately; exercise considerable judgment and initiative to perform duties; complete projects on time with minimal supervision. Ability to work collaboratively in decision-making for enhancements in library services, collections, and procedures. Ability to learn, adapt, and utilize current and new technologies.

Physical abilities must include use of gross and fine motor skills to sit, stand, lift, shift, carry, reach, bend, push, walk, talk, listen, and handle various objects, tools, or controls.  Must occasionally lift and move up to 35 pounds.  Required visual and auditory abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus, and hear familiar sounds, distinguish sound as voice patterns, and communicate through human speech.

Skills: Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills; customer service relations; multitasking and organizational skills; technical applications and use of library technology and office equipment.  Fluency in Portuguese or Spanish is a plus.                                                                   

Qualifications

Masters of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, and a minimum of two years’ of progressive library experience, reference and information technology services, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must complete and pass a physical examination with drug screening and a CORI/SORI.

Hours:  Up to 6 hours a week on average including, one evening, one Saturday, and any month with a 5th Saturday.
