Library Assistant, Holbrook Public Library (Holbrook)

This position is 20 hours per week including evenings and Saturdays. Flexibility in scheduling is a plus.  This is a union position. (AA/EOE)

Basic Function:
Library Assistants perform a variety of non-professional library work of routine difficulty requiring some specialized knowledge.  Work involves responsibility for routine circulation and cataloging practices and procedures. 

Supervision:
Works under the immediate supervision of a sub-professional library, a professional librarian, or a member of the library management team.  

Principal Duties:

1. Provides a high level of courteous and professional customer service to all patrons.

2. Supports the Sub-Professional Librarians in the daily operations of the circulation and cataloging departments.

     General Duties:

           a. Register patrons for new cards.

          b. Charge and Discharge materials to patrons and from patrons.

          c. Answer the telephone and direct calls appropriately.

          d. Assists patrons with online catalog searches, general computer assistance, and library digital content services.

          e. Assists patrons with locating materials inside the Holbrook Public Library and at other OCLN member libraries.

          f. Assists in the processing of materials, and discarding of materials.

          g. Upsells library services to patrons.

          h. Helps create marketing and promotional materials for library services and events. 

          i. Special projects as assigned by a supervisor.

          j. Other tasks as required by the Library Director.

          k. Prints and processes daily reports.

          l. Places, gathers, and traps holds for patrons.

          m. Empty outside book drop on a daily basis.

Qualifications

Associates degree is preferred. High school diploma or equivalency required.  Strong computer and communications skills are required.  Previous library experience is required.
