Part-time Youth Services Library Technician I, Cary Memorial Library (Lexington)

As one of the busiest library in the Commonwealth, Cary Memorial Library works hard to be at the forefront of library services.  The Youth Services Department works as a strong team, playing to the strengths and skills of our members. We celebrate the diversity of our community through our programming and our collections. We are a busy and active department, embracing the energy and enthusiasm with a service population from toddlers to teens.  

Library Technicians assist in all service areas of the library, a busy, service-oriented environment.  This position performs a full range of library responsibilities, including assisting patrons in locating material, checking materials in and out, handling network transfers, answering telephones, processing new materials, and shelving materials. While primarily scheduled in the Children’s Room, this position may also include hours at a Teen Room service point as well.

Schedule:  17 hours/week with four weekday shifts of 4 hours each, including Mondays from 5 to 9 pm, plus one Saturday every 4 weeks.


The ideal candidate will hold at least a High School or Associate Degree, will be self-motivated, and will possess the ability to establish rapport with patrons of all ages, as well as demonstrate attention to detail.  PC proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications are required.  Experience using Innovative Interface’s Sierra software is preferred, although we will consider candidates with experience using other automated library systems or comparable software. Knowledge of children’s literature and ability to speak Chinese or Korean are a plus.

$18.52 - $25.89 hourly, commensurate with experience. Sick leave, vacation and holiday benefits only. Union position.
