Circulation Supervisor, Marstons Mills Library (Barnstable)

Marstons Mills Library, a small not-for -profit library located in Barnstable, MA is looking for a friendly, upbeat, experienced Circulation Supervisor with a great sense of humor to complete our team. 

 Starting pay is $21.00/hour with the following schedule:

Mondays: 9-5

Tuesdays: 11-7

Wednesdays:  8-4

Fridays: 9-5

Definition:  Under the general direction of the Library Director, the Circulation Supervisor performs specialized tasks related to the circulation of library materials including processing circulating materials, shelving, answering patron inquires in person and on the phone, and handling money for fees or other services. 

The Circulation Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of staff, providing schedules, training and conducting performance reviews. Duties require supervisory skills, independent judgment, and independent action. The Circulation Supervisor interacts with the public and other staff members.

Responsibilities: Enforces circulation policy and develops circulation procedures in accordance with accepted network standards.
Exercises direct supervision over circulation, cataloguing staff and volunteers; maintains staff & volunteer schedule. 
Coordinates maintenance of records and statistics of library holdings; prepare reports that monitor items added to and withdrawn from the collection; reconcile cataloging/inventory reports.
 Creates standard bibliographic entries in the on-line library catalog; modify item records and status;
Reviews bibliographic records edited by staff; withdraw library materials from the bibliographic database.
Oversees the preparation of new materials for patron use; ensure proper labeling of materials for circulation.
Supervises circulation functions, reserves, and inter-library loan (ILL) services
Oversees the coordination of materials receipt and delivery
Manages bills for lost  items
Recommends items for purchase 
Checks materials in and out
Oversees shelving of materials, trains and retrains staff and volunteers as necessary; oversees and rotates shelf reading;
Under the supervision of the  director carries out the selection and weeding of fiction, non-fiction and reference library materials according to library policies
Identifies materials in need of replacement or repair; repairs materials
Provides oversight to ensure that the Library’s e-readers are fully charged upon return
Registers new borrowers and updates patron records
Oversees use and maintenance of copiers,  fax and computers
Manages supply inventory for all circulation/cataloging desk needs
Updates and Manages the library web site, social media, email newsletter and community bulletin boards. Monitors and responds to emails in the library’s general account.
Assists with planning for adult, children’s  and fundraising programs as needed
Provides basic technical support for computers and devices
Open and Closes Library
 Serves on the CLAMS pub services committee

 Knowledge, ability and skills: Knowledge of  library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems
Ability to troubleshoot and fix minor technology malfunctions
Ability to deal effectively with the public and staff
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when dealing with difficult patrons or uncomfortable situations
Ability to manage numerous diverse tasks at one time
Ability to complete projects on time with minimal supervision
Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision and take initiative to work successfully execute work responsibilities
Ability to adapt to change
Demonstrated passion for public services and public contact
Ability to work in a pleasant and effective manner with customers, co-workers, other agencies and departments
Ability to work as a part of a team
Ability to work with Microsoft Word and Excel
Ability to prepare accurate monthly financial reports
Ability to supervise, schedule staff, complete payroll time report; maintains staff & volunteer schedule. 


Four years of progressively responsible library experience in a supervisory capacity, thorough knowledge of automated library systems & ILL.

Bachelor’s Degree, Associate's Degree or HS Diploma with above listed experience.
