User Needs and Assessment Librarian, Harvard University / Harvard Library (Cambridge)

In partnership with Harvard’s Administrative Fellowship Program and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, the Harvard Library Diversity Residency Program attracts talented librarians, and in particular, members of historically underrepresented groups, to provide meaningful professional working experience and to cultivate the professional goals and interests of the resident.  Additionally, through a combination of events sponsored by the Harvard Library, the Administrative Fellowship Program and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, Residents have the opportunity work in an academic environment complemented by career development experiences.  This is a two-year residency. 

One of the greatest impacts that COVID-19 has had on our work environment is access: the closure of our physical spaces and restrictions on access to our collections and in-person services. The pandemic has underscored the importance of providing our users with alternative ways of using the library through welcoming, easy-to-navigate, and accessible services and tools so our users continue to receive the highest-level of research support, regardless of where they (or we) are physically located.   

Work with Harvard Business School’s Knowledge & Library Services (KLS) team to accelerate the evolution of our work due to the COVID-19. Help us to determine how to best incorporate the new services and products developed during the pandemic into our ongoing suite of library offerings and refine them.  

The User Needs and Assessment Librarian will be part of a dedicated, customer-service oriented cross-KLS team seeking to proactively meet the needs of our users. Reporting to the Director, Curriculum & Learning Services (CLS), this position will observe and analyze the use of library collections, services, and resources; seek to understand customer preferences; and identify emerging trends in the field of business librarianship and information management. They will collaborate with colleagues to collate that information into concrete recommendations for improvements and innovations in library services, and in the design and functionality of the library’s physical and virtual spaces.  

Job-Specific Responsibilities

The individual in this role will:

assist in the development and implementation of a KLS-user research and assessment program to inform service design 
coordinate assessment data collection, analysis, and documentation to ensure the development of products and services is driven by evidence 
assist in the user-centric, ongoing development of the library’s web presence, employing student, faculty and staff- focused usability testing and industry standards to inform the strategy and goals of the site  
provide monthly analysis of web analytics and search logs to inform website development 
conduct an accessibility review of the Baker Library website and make recommendations for a remediation plan in coordination with Product Owners 
under the supervision of Baker Library website Product Owners, QA and provide feedback on site development

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree in library/information science  
Up to three years of professional work experience 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Ability to collaborate effectively within the department, across Knowledge & Library Services, and the Harvard Library. 
Customer-focused mindset 
Proven ability to set priorities, meet multiple deadlines, and share work/projects with multiple stakeholders 
Excellent communication and writing skills. 
Exhibit excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills 
Experience with user needs assessment 
Experience with web accessibility best practices 
Knowledge of emerging trends in information access 
Interest in learning about contemporary and historical business research   

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
