Head of Youth Services, Westwood Public Library (Westwood)

The Westwood Public Library, a 32,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art facility, is seeking an innovative, high energy, and independent thinking professional librarian to fill the position of Head of Youth Services.  The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of library principles, practices, and services, as well as a broad background and knowledge in collection development and readers' advisory service specific to youth ages 0 to 18 and their families.  The position reports to the Library Director.

The Head of Youth Services must be flexible, adapt quickly to ever-changing technology, and possess a thorough knowledge of print, online resources, as well as popular media.  Individual will be responsible for developing and executing child programming initiatives, including marketing and promotion of events, programs and services.  Position includes supervising and training staff (one full time Children’s Librarian and one full time Teen Services Librarian), Library assistants and volunteers; maintaining the Youth Services department schedule; and managing the budget lines for the purchase of children’s literature and other library materials.  Individual will foster outreach with community organizations, town departments, other libraries, and will collaborate with school personnel on special programs and events.  Writes and administers federal, state and local grants for children’s and youth services.

Broad knowledge of emerging technology related to library operations, as well as a grasp of innovative trends in culture, technology, literature and news that affect children and teens is required.  Excellent oral and written communications skills and an ability to contribute to a team environment is a must; a sense of humor is a plus.

Public desk staffing is routinely involved.  Position requires one evening shift per week and one Saturday per month.


Master's in Library Science from an A.L.A.-accredited institution; five years of experience in library operations including acquisitions, reference, and collection development; 3 years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

$58,222 - $72,712 annual salary range in ten steps.
