Young Adult Librarian, Walpole Public Library (Walpole)

Duties: Under the general direction of the Youth Services Librarian, the Young Adult Librarian performs specialized tasks related to providing library services to children from grade 7 and up.  The Young Adult Librarian conducts both onsite and offsite programming, creates displays, and performs other tasks as necessary to promote the mission of the Walpole Public Library.  Duties may require independent judgment and action within specific parameters.  The Young Adult Librarian interacts with the public and with other staff and will often serve as the first point of contact to the department.

Essential Functions:  Manages, develops, and delivers innovative programing for teens.  Conducts regular community needs assessments.  Oversees the teen room and assists patrons as needed.  Provides reader’s advisory and reference services to teens and adults.  Manages the young adult collection, including selection and weeding of materials to ensure the content is based on needs of community; creates teen room displays.  Plans and implements outreach initiatives for young adults in grade 7 and up.  Creates content for the teen pages on the library’s website and social media.  Staffs the Reference Desk on a regular basis.  Supports general library activities such as covering library service areas for adults, teens and children as assigned.  Represents the library at OCLN and community meetings.  Stays up-to-date on professional development through participation in professional organizations, OCLN meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities.  Supervises library staff during evening and weekend shifts.   Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.


Master of Science degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program required.  At least two years of professional library experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.  Ability to work independently and responsibly.  Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as strong social media skills.  Establish and maintain connections with employees, supervisors, and public, both adults and children.

$24.65 per hour. 35 hour work week that includes at least one night and one Saturday in four.
